Hi all,
the old 55 has developed an odd sound or two. When we take of she squeels but not a fan belt squeel, also something else... have noticed the sound of something still spinning after i shut of the engine, this might be normal, but has not been obvious before. I can also hear the same sound to a degree when sitting still with the engine running, clutch in or out makes no difference. Kind of sounds like something rubbing...? Clutch was replaced when i had the transfer case re-built two years ago, transmission was not touched at the time. Engine is good as gold (i hope). Will be checking the oil levels everywhere tommorow, and tightening the fan belt just to be sure. Any thoughts?
Cheers,

Hmmmm, once you find it you just have to tell us what it was. Agatha Cristy mystery thing. My guess, your starter is not disengaging its' drive. Therefore, the spinning noise is the starter disengaging after the motor stops because the rotation of the motor is what is holding it in the engaged position. Just a guess. Good luck, Pigs rule.

That's the first I thought of was the starter.

hmm, might try pulling the starter off, tapping it or something...
Its a clutchless fan Cat scan, else that would make a lot of sense!
thanks for the ideas.

OK, sorry my idea did not pan out. I would think that you need to find out what it is soon before it becomes worse and something breaks/fails.

Yes, as stated by rsbcruiser, please let us know when you find the cause of the noise.

You might have to recruit the help of others in order to get to the bottom of this one! This would drive me nuts til solved.

Good luck.

I have a similar squeak! Not the fan belt as I have recently replaced the water pump and found it was nice and tight.

It makes a definitively different pitch than the fanbelt. Is it much higher in tone and lighter sounding?

A mechanic told me my starter was going....that was four years ago. I'm still waiting for that day I guess. Hope you locate your issue.

Could be timing gears, grab a mechanic's stethoscope (cheap, I paid a $1.99 for mine) and listen various components of the engine. My 2F made a med/high pitch whine or squeal only at low RPM's and as RPM's increaed the noise decreaed.

Try shutting the truck off with the clutch depressed, and then again with it not depressed. Is the noise the same or different (or even still there)?

Since you hear something still spinning when you shut the engine off, you have to focus on things that are indirectly connected:

If the noise changes during the test I mentioned above, then your clutch/TO bearing is suspect.

If it doesn't change, then something is spinning on the engine itself; the starter is only only thing that isn't directly attached to the crank.
