Strange Clicking

67 FJ40 F135 totally stock 3speed on the tree.

I get a decent clicking sound when turning as well as when coasting in gear. The sound is intermitten and not always present. The sound seems to come from the front of the rig somewhere. Any clues or opinions on where I should start looking first?
 
Have you done anything to it recently?
It just started on its own?
Everything looks in order?

Some more specifics would help.
 
Birfield? Front d-shaft? Loud tick? Drive in circles with a friend outside the rig. See if you can narrow it down.
 
I'm going to check my clutch to make sure everything is still tight, then maybe take apart my pass side front tire to check for anything else on that side. it's wierd though i don't have any vibrations and my u-joints are all new so that eliminates the d-shaft. MY clutch is a little bumpy when is let it out in first when i'm gong to crawl around so maybe that's all it is but I doon't know. I'll post up more tomorrow.
 
If you have caps that cover your locking hubs, you may want to remove those.

Against the advice of many, I left the covers on that the PO had installed for over a month: I got a strange clicking sound every once in a while, on one side only. I removed the wheels one day to inspect and found that three bolts were rolling around inside the cover.
 
Does the noise go away when you use the brakes? If so, I would say the brake pads are rattling. Are there anti rattle clips/springs installed on your frt brake pads?

Good suggestion, I will look into it. I know about 8 months ago when i adjusted my brakes there were springs on them but I haven't looked recently.
 
My bad, I didn't realize you had drums. Disc brake pads can rattle.
 
You sure you have birfs? I thought they started in 68. My 1967 parts book shows good old ball and claws like I have in my 64.
 
ahh then what would it be? I don't know I haven't dug into it yet. Though I am sure they are stock axles i dont know what kind. How do you tell the difference?

I am not sure how to tell from the outside. I just glanced at my 64 and my 70 with birf and nothing jumps out to me other than that the 67 has 1 steering stop per side and the 70 has 2 per side. Perhaps someone else knows. The big difference is inside.

I'm not sure of the exact date of changeover. It's conceivable that a truck with a late 1967 manufacture date would have a 1968 axle.

Anyway, ball and claw is quite different. Different technology and it uses an inner bushing instead of an inner axle seal (and you can't just swap over).

The first picture is ball and claw inner and outer axle pulled apart for clarity, with the inner bushing on the side.

The second is a birfield.

I just don't want you getting set up to do a job and find you got the wrong parts.

Ha! I was out in the barn climbing over s*** to take the picture as you were posting!

Those are my old ball-and-claws that I swapped out for Ed's less worn set. Ed, you have to swap out the whole axle to make the conversion from b/c to birfield, coarse or fine, right?

i'll postup my vin # maybe that will shed some light.

FJ40 47503 Looks like Jan. of 67 so I should have ball and claw style axles.
