Diagnostic clues

Bad CV joints will click loudly on FWD cars when turning but unless your hubs are engaged & truck is in 4WD, your front axles should not be turning & you shouldn't be getting that same clicking noise, right? If you can securely hoist the truck & run it in & out of 4WD, that would be the best way to locate the noise source. It could be a bolt backing itself out & rubbing some where. Definitely change the front axle housing in it's entirety - it's so much easier. Whole assemblies are available for at most $200.

If I were to upgrade do i have to swap diffs, and axle housings or just the axle itself?

It can be done, but you have to remove the bronze bushing and source a special axle seal, swap out the side gears on the chunk to fine splines and grind the ends of the housing to allow room for the Birf. There may be more.....

My three-finger clutch made a tick-tick-tick, but went away when you rested your foot on the clutch pedal. When I swapped clutches, one finger was quite worn.

Did this cause any problems with shifting etc. have to pump the clutch?

Deg it is my clutch that is making the noise. I tried to adjust the fingers but it is hard to make them even when on the rig. Should the adjusting bolts be up against the T/O bearing or a fraction of an inch away from the T/O Bearing?

I have no idea about that except to say that if only one is touching, you get the tic-tic-tic. When I rested my foot on the clutch peday (presume that allowed all three to contact the TO bearing) the noise went away. So, my guess would be.....adjust so all three are in contact with the TO bearing.

Well Deg, I've adjusted the 3 fingers a couple times now but it still chirps when under load. I will look at it again. I also found a bad rear u-joint, that just went. I should be able to fix it all up tonight. Anyone have any suggestions on the clutch adjustments?

On most clutches, you don't want the face of the throw out bearing to touch the clutch fingers all of the time. Otherwise the throw out bearing spins constantly and prematurely wears out. Once it is shot them you have to pull the tranny out to replace it. It should only contact the fingers once you begin to press the clutch pedal.

On my 1974, that uses the old 3 finger style clutch, the manual has me adjust it so there is about 1/4 of space between the face of the throw out bearing and the clutch fingers. Also make sure the fork return spring on your clutch rod adjustment rod is present and has good tension. This will keep the throw out bearing fron contacting the clutch fingers unless you press the pedal.

If there is a significant difference in the distance between one of the 3 fingers versus the other 2, I would guess that your pressure plate may be having an issue that requires replacing it, unless one of the 3 just loosened up.

If your throw out bearing is chirping when you press the clutch pedal, then it is probably already shot and needs to be replaced. Some of them had a grease fitting on them that you can access by removing the clutch inspection plate on the bottom of the bell housing. If yours has a grease fitting it may just be dry, but usually once they start making noise they are bad.

well i got my clutch fingers adjusted again for the 4th time last night. I had to tighten them all the way down, to get the space i needed between the finger and T/O bearing. I'm guessing this is because I put a new boot on my fork and it holds it closer to the fingers? Does that sound right?I tried to push it further back and tried toadjust the slave cylinder and it had no effect on the space between. Let me know what you think. It shifts nice and is way smoother now though, and it doesn't make a single sound. Let me know if I may have a problem somewhere down there.
