I am at work and got a call from my wife describing a loud grinding sound in the front of our 2013 LC200. She said she felt like she could not control or slow the vehicle during and shortly after this time. She now says there is “oil” leaking near the front right wheel and there is a strong odor. She claims there are no warning lights on the dash. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks. Based on her description of making a low speed right turn and not feeling that she could slow when it occurred, I am thinking and hoping for your assessment. I’ll be at work until late this evening so we are having it towed. We have a 3 year-old who likes to crawl through the front of the truck and press every button on his way to his carseat in the back. However, my wife said there were no lights indicating crawl control, etc. and she had no issues throughout the morning running errands at speed on the freeways. Thanks, again.

Regardless of what it is, it sounds like a tow situation. If you keep driving it, the additional damage could be much greater than the cost of the tow.

The grinding sound was probably the ABS trying to regulate the brake on the left side, since it sounds like there was no braking force being applied to the right side, possibly due to ruptured brake line/fitting.
saying that it smelled may also indicate a cv boot failure with melted grease contaminating the wheel speed sensor, that would cause the abs to activate and prevent braking.
either way, glad she was able to get it to a safe spot and get a tow.

Thanks for everyone’s replies. I am waiting to hear back from the service department.

If it was clicking, it was loud clicking. She described it as loud and grinding as she made a right turn into a parking lot on level pavement. This Cruiser has been well-taken care of and has less than 50k miles. So, we’ll see.

I'm glad everyone is okay. Hopefully the repair doesn't set you back too much.

So ... what was the problem? :hmm:

When you’re not driving it you never know what women run over.

We should start making our “women” wear ankle monitors that only allow them to travel between the kitchen and the laundry room!

I have no idea what my wife has run over when she’s piloted our truck over the waterfall obstacle on Metal Masher, down the steep loose descent of Red Cone, or like in this most recent trip, driving a rocky, exposed shelf road with about a 6” margin of error separating life and death. You can’t tell in this pic (bottom right corner brandywine 200), but the dog and I are chilling in the passenger seats while my wife owned this trail. ;)

Thanks for all of the replies, but most of you were no help at all!

Here is the text exchange before the vehicle was towed:

Me: Maybe the brakes?

Wife: Is break fluid smelly?

Me: I don’t know. Never heard of break fluid.

Wife: Ha ha. Brake.

Me: Yes. It can smell fishy.

Wife: This smells like ass.

Me: Please have the tech call me before we go chasing big money items.

Well, we spent no money. What I did prove is that my wife has a good nose and SWUtah knows women (“When you’re not driving it you never know what women run over”). It appears some unfortunate animal took refuge somewhere in the drivetrain or made a poor decision getting in front of the Land Cruiser. The Toyota service department agreed it “smelled like ass.”

Thanks again, everyone.

:princess::rofl:

LOL, glad it worked out to just be "eau de critter"!

Thanks again, everyone.

It made my point women never know what they run over as a guy we would’ve crawled underneath it and looked and he would’ve saw a dead animal like you mention the service department did and then you would’ve driven to a car Worsch versus Toan to the dealership God I hate being right all the time
