Anybody live up in n Raleigh around to give me a hand? Pappy is dead at the gas station and won't even turn over-no click or anything when I try to start him-help me!

Do you have any electrics? Check your battery terminals. Undo and reattach them to confirm they're tight. Might just be a bad connection. Also check the connections at the starter. I can't remember the colors but I think there's 2 large and 1 small wire. There's also an engine fuse that might have blown. It's in the fuse panel. Im Not sure if you have a fusible link anywhere that might have blown. I'd remove all fuses one by one to verify they're good and replace. Ideally clean the terminals in the fuse box as you go with some really fine sandpaper or emery paper. The tip of a flat blade screwdriver can be used as a scraper if needed.

uzj100 and jbschniper are somewhat local and great folk. Not sure of their sunday family schedule.
Might be an option at least to get a ride if needed. Kluganot is another member with good cruiser wisdom that chimed in to help me last month or so. Unfortunately I havent met him yet. Great diagnostics advice if you can get ahold of him.

Do you suspect battery or starter yet?
not sure of pappy's setup but thinking mostly stock. do you get power at all with the key?
can you hear the fuel pump run?

good advice above. check the simple things first. ive had a negative battery cable vibrate lose.

one thought is to jump the positive lead to the signal post on the starter if you have that screwdriver handy (that would be the threaded post with big battery cable attached to smaller post with ignition wire attached)

this will only work if you battery and starter are fine but there is a short/break in ignition circuit

if the battery is toast you may be able to get a jump from a good samaritan and go straight home.

if you try to get a jump and it does nothing different i would suspect starter or wiring....

** caveat of typing on the fly and not an expert..... but been in your position before **
standby for the club to respond......sundays a slow day though. sent a text on your behalf.
may want to post a contact # or addy and where you are stranded. N RDU gets broader by the week it seems.

btw you still got one sweet ride there.... im sure pappy looks good sitting there
But:beer: to hearing him roar to life and carry you home. Best of luck.

Finally got it going-batt terminals are toast so gonna pick some new ones up and hope that's it. Thx guys for the quick response.

Was running errands in cary today, sorry for not seeing this sooner. I'll PM you my phone number so you have it in case something like this happens again, you can call.

I will also send you my number. I'm not an expert, but since we live so close figured we could help each other in tight situations like these.

Might want to do like i do and make your own cables. Work so much better / stronger. Just an idea.

Now Darin, what did I tell you about my skill level on Saturday? Haha

Haha I know but I have no clue how to make homemade jumper cables! I got it all hooked up now and just need to jump it.

That's what I meant-battery cables....Long day today-time for bourbon! Thx all for the help!

Haha yeah I was trying not to bug anyone too badly on a Sunday. Luckily all was ok!

Every Toyota I've ever owned or driven has had this similar issue. Usually just need to loosen the lugs, wiggle, and retighten. My guess is some kind of galvanic action related to Toyota's lovely steel body.
My brother called a few weeks ago stuck at a gas station in Rocky Mt with gfriend and future in-laws in his recent 80 series purchase. They all thought I was some kind of genius when the truck roared to life after my instruction to wiggle and tighten battery lugs. Of course some corrosion inhibitor would eliminate the issue to begin with, as well as corroding all the way :).
After you get your new lugs, cables, or however much you replace in, make sure you pick up some electrical grease or similar at the parts store. Will make you happier later for sure :)

Turns out it wasn't the battery at all-the starter wire had jiggled loose. On the plus side, my terminals were shot so I have nice new ones now. :)

I believe I said to check those, too. It's not always the first thing! Glad you're running again.

Yeah I did but to a newbie, the clips didn't match at all and I couldn't tell what connected.
