You can be the safest driver in the world, but you still have no control over other people and the stupid stuff they'll pull. If someone tries to pass you and spins out directly in front of you, you'll be much better off on dedicated winter tires than on any other option.
The point is: you never know what situation you'll end up in, and it's a good idea to stack the odds in your favour at all times.

No idea. Don’t think anybody has any clue. They just sound funny to folks who don’t know what they are.Do they even check non commercial vehicles? LOL I know a few people that stud their tyres and they have never had an issue with the law. Just don't take it in for the annual inspection with the studded set I guess? I don't run them but they do make a huge difference on ice. I bet you could stud an all season and it would perform better on ice than snow tyres.
