Yeah, the stock Dunlops on the LX are OK too. It's ll in how you drive. Drive like an idiot and you're gonna have a bad time.

My folks ran 4 sets of the AT23s in the NE for 220,000 miles. Only recently switch to Defenders.

Had ZERO issues.

Don’t be an irresponsible driver and you’ll be fine. Simple.

I hated my AT23s so much in snow that I just yanked them after 800 miles for some Toyo AT3s. The AT23s will get you around, but they are not confidence inspiring on the white stuff. To each his own.

That's a good starting point, but not the whole picture. You can be the safest driver in the world, but you still have no control over other people and the stupid stuff they'll pull. If someone tries to pass you and spins out directly in front of you, you'll be much better off on dedicated winter tires than on any other option.

The point is: you never know what situation you'll end up in, and it's a good idea to stack the odds in your favour at all times.

Exactly why I run illegal studded Nokian Hakka 9s in Illinois.

Do they even check non commercial vehicles? LOL I know a few people that stud their tyres and they have never had an issue with the law. Just don't take it in for the annual inspection with the studded set I guess? I don't run them but they do make a huge difference on ice. I bet you could stud an all season and it would perform better on ice than snow tyres.

No idea. Don’t think anybody has any clue. They just sound funny to folks who don’t know what they are.
