Just over a week ago I purchased a 1982 FJ40. I'm in the process of tuning it up and doing some routine maintenance before going in to get it smogged (CA). The cat and muffler are on the left side underneath the driver and the exhaust exits just in front of the left rear wheel. Is this stock or modified by a PO?

Thanks in advance.

Hi John,
Congrats.. I'm still looking for my FJ40. Mind if I ask where/what you got? eBay? Anyways, I'm local to you. Good luck with your exhaust work, and please post and let me know how things go with the wonderful CA smog test. I'd be interested to know how much of a problem this might be. I'm also looking for an '81-'83.

Not stock. I have an '82 California spec FJ40 with stock exhaust. The cat is directly below the driver's seat and the muffler is transversely mounted at the rear and exits on the RH side rear. Your plumbing was modified by the PO.

See diagram for 78-84 FJ40 exhaust in SOR catalog--

Lee,

That's what I suspected. At one time there was an aux fuel tank. I'm guessing that's why the muffler was moved.

Do you (or anyone) know if this is an automatic failure of a CA smog check?

Probably a good guess. Every aux fuel tank I've seen installed occupied the stock muffler location. I'm in Texas and don't know squat about Cal smog checks. I'd guess that if your cat is in place and you have a muffler, they won't care where it's located. Lots of California guys on MUD who can advise you.

WAIS Document Retrieval

don't know about smog but reading this side-exit is not prohibited (but i ain't no lawyer).

Thanks for the link! That's great info. I plan on getting a "preliminary" smog check done this week and will post the results and if the side exhaust was an issue.

The pics from SOR don't show where the tube runs. I know my exhaust is not stock. Did the stock exhaust (Mine is a 71) go above or below the skid plate?

Anyone know?

Steve
