I think that many of the members here are using Mobil 1 or similar synthetic motoe oil. I am.
Does it offer benefits over mineral based motor oils? I think it does. The motor runs smoother, and there is less oil breakdown from heat. I have several examples of positive evidence from other of my vehicles. My cruiser just hums along at 175,000 miles.
What about shifting over to synthetic? I've heard if the engine has run previously on regular, going to synthetic will basically "bleed out" the engine seals. True?
Previously I have used Chevron Supreme 20w-50, or Delo 15w-40, but I may be a convert to the Shell Rotella Syn 5w-40. I've been running it since Surf and Turf and my oil consumption is definitely lower. I may go back to the 20w-50 in the summer but I'm undecided. By the way-I believe it's a myth that Synthetic oils cause oil leaks. Worn seals cause oil leaks, or in the case of FJ60s, it's usually the pan gasket!
Synths kick ass over dino's in all areas but cost.
But I put on too few miles to benefit from it.
I've got that tiny leak coming from the oil pan, plus i tend to Seafoam a few times a year, which tends to contaminate the oil.
I usually go with a 15/40 diesel package, if not, a 10/40 mulitgrade.
Whatever I happen to have around
typically I am using Castrol 20/50
But I have a huge supply of rotella T sitting around for the diesel so I might just switch over.
I'm w/ mace on this. Whatever is cheapest or laying around the shop. These are stupid engines and they don't care what oil is in them, just as long as it is clean, full and cool. Synth will always show a 2-3% improvement in efficiency on the dynamometer, but the cost of 9 quarts of synth is a net loser, especially if the rig is actually 4-wheeled and needs frequent oil changes.
I don't think it is worth switching over to synthetics if you been running dino oil in a cruiser since it was new. Regular oil changes and taking care of it will make it last a long time. There are a lot of old cruisers on here that got +200K miles before syth. oil ever came out I bet.
This maybe old news but I use 10w-30. Most of the time I was buying it by the 12qt case. The other day I was in Autozone and found 10w-30 in gallon jugs. I like those better. Makes it easier to recycle.
Stupid Question. What do the oil numbers really mean. 20w-50 vs 10w-30 and why is 15w-40 considered a diesel oil?
