Are the air cleaner assemblies the same for all years or are there subtle differences. Short story - bought my 1980 FJ40 and it was missing the air cleaner assembly & the carb. Added a Trollhole carb when engine was rebuilt & picked up an air cleaner assembly from a 77 or 78 along the way - so should this fit OK or do I need one specifically from a 1980?
There are subtle differences every year. But there is a major difference 75-80 vs 81-87. The 75-80 air cleaner is taller than the 81-87. The new 81-87 carb will be about 1cm beneath the air cleaner lid.
TH should have a ring of PVC pipe that fits in there to fill the space.
While were talking about 2f air cleaner. . I have a 78. I have the three wing nuts but were there metal/rubber washers under them? Is someone selling those or should I just use a rubber washer from a hardware store?
There are tapered rubber nuts that seal the holes on the aircleaner, a rubber washer from the hardware store would work, but the self centering stock kind is a little better.
Jim is right of course on the aircleaner change, 80 and up are shorter/thinner. I don't think it is a big issue to put the older style ones on a 40 though as the hood still clears. The airfilter change came about because of the FJ-60 hood line. It is a tight fit under there.

here is a post i instigated on the THC thread about this exact question. marshall even shot some great pics to show the difference. it all depends on your valve cover. if yours has "2F" molded into the side, you need the later a/c.
The rubber washer is crimped onto the later (79-newer?) wingnut. The early wingnut has a separate sealing washer (steel backer w/ rubber inside). Both styles are still available from Toyota, but I just install the later all-in-one style, to avoid this very problem (lost sealing washer).
