I drive a 91 Toyota standard cab pickup to work every day. It is a great truck with only 76k miles but it is slow, noisy, rides bad, etc. Plus it is small so two adults pretty much leaves only the bed for storage.

I looked a 89 fj62 today with mid 230k miles. The truck is clean in and out but has a few problems...

-leaking rear main seal
-brake pedal goes almost too the floor (not sure what the cause of this is)
-power windows are slow on some windows and stuck on others
-power ant. is broken
-steering in slow turns seems to require a lot of effort, then gets easy like something is wrong with the power steering
-general looseness of the body/steering during normal driving
-fuel gauge shows empty all the time
-engine stalled a few times on me

Asking price is $3k

The LC is nicer than my normal ride, sits up higher, and has a lot more room. I also think that these trucks are going to appreciate in value as they get older. I am used to slow/rough riding vehicles so that is not much of an issue. The gas mileage is not too much of a concern for me since I only go about 150 miles a week. I was quoted $900 to replace the rear main which seems high but is not out of the question.

My biggest concern is reliability since this would be my daily driver. I would take the truck to my mechanic for a look over before handing over the cash. Considering the above (condition and price) should I pass on this one or keep it in consideration.

it sounds like they are asking a bit too much for that landcruiser, sounds like it has alot of problems. I wouldn't pay 3k for it at any rate. LC's are nice trucks to drive, I DD my '90 62. Only do about 150 miles every 2 weeks though, I don't drive much/far. I'd say take it to a mechanic and get it checked out, and get them to lower the price accordingly, that sounds like way too much for that IMO.

I paid 2K for an 87 with less than half those miles, and mine needed about $900 worth of repairs as well when I bought it.

too much for that truck. Unless Land Cruisers are really rare where you live.

that seems like a lot of money for a lot of problems.

how much $ are you willing to spend?

if you are patient and keep your eyes and ears open, then you will find a better deal and a better ride.

if you peruse enough websites, boards, mags, etc, then you will find there are plenty of other cruisers out there.

Thanks for the responses. I may make an offer in the $1500-2000 range considering the work required.

I was originally looking for an 80 series in the 10k or so range but the lower mileage trucks are few and far between.

Bag the truck. The 62 has room, a solid front axle, cheaper insurance, and will survive a crash mostly intact that would fold the pickup. Shop around. Find someone in your area who is in the Cruiser community and you will find a good truck, or at least someone who can help you learn how to fix those issues you mentioned.

When I was looking fro a new car b/f I bought my 89 fj62. I considered a yota truck like yours even went to buy one and backed out b/c it needed too much work. ( long story Basically I drove from South Carolina to Arkansas to look at a truck and then turned around without the truck and came home)

Both vehicles will run forever if taken care of. Space was one of my main reasons for getting my LC other than price. Wife was expecting our first and even an extened cab would have been tight.

Any rust on the LC? That seems to be the biggest thing for them. Wish mine didnt have any rust, but I am in the process of working on that.

Look at it this wey. With the 2 trucks you are comparing the milage on your truck is alot lower. And I figure a LC to go 300K b/f any major isses.

I bought my 62 nine months ago it had 190K miles on it, it now has 211K on it, and the only thing i have done is replace the main seal, and egr valve. I have a 04 Tundra , 01 4runner and I only drive the 62!

Cruiser

I would stick with the cruiser just because it is cooler.
