step rail ? rock slider ?

Hi

I have a 1989 fj62 w/ old man emu suspension and 35 inch tires -- I'm short and the ride is high. So, I need a step rail or rock sliders that could double as a step rail. I live in New Mexico (Santa FE). Any suggestions on what I can get -- or who I should contact that could make something up that would work?

Hey Charles, go to www.jkcustoms.com. He will be happy to fab up something. I've got a 62 with OME but can only fit 33's. What else did you do to stuff 35's? And what kind did you go with?

It all depends on if you want step bars or true nerf bars. With exception of Slee above, all the others are add on stuff that is more fashion than function unless all you want is a step to get in. Most of them will do more damage to your body than the rocks will off road. Side protectin bars become a part of your frame. You shold be able to put your entire truck on them and winch off of them if needed. Jason at JK Customs makes some great ones and I do also. Neither are cheap.

Hi David,

Question for you if you don't mind...for some reason I was under the impression that nerfs like the 2" round tube from SOR could support the weight of a 60, if mounted to the frame rails correctly? They are pretty plain looking, and clearly don't offer as much rock protection as a slee-type slider. You get what you pay for of course, but mild rock protection + ability to use as a jack point + ability to use to winch from seems OK for moderate trail use...unless I am missing something. You have way more trail experience than I do, so I'd appreciate your thoughts on this please.

I just looked at the SOR bars. They are 3" and come straight out from the frame. you will lose some ground clearance. The tube diameter seems very thin although I have only seen one set up close. There are 2 mounting points which I guess are either bolt on or weld on. For the use you describe they will be OK but expect them to get mangled if you get into difficult stuff.

I got the SOR flares and do not reccomend them if you plan to slide on rocks. They do not come with mounting brackets and I welded them on.I can tell you more if you are interested in buying these products.

Thanks for your feedback on the SOR nerfs. I had a purchase planned for later this summer, but it sounds like it wouldn't be a good use of money, for what I need, in the long run (and lets face it, a cruiser is all about the long run!). I'll save a little longer and get some "real" rock sliders.

I actually got them to replace the 80's style running board on the cruiser and they were cheap enough. They won't hold the weight of the cruiser so I having some regrets about having bought it. I really didn't expect some rough terrain in the Midwest and need more of a step on the truck for everybody including grandma to get in. I got tired of running around the vehicle trying to place a footstool to help people in and out of 3" lifted cruiser with 32 inch tires.

I need the steps too for carrying passengers too, and to make it easier to load ski's on the roof rack. However, I want them to be sturdy enough to use as a jack point and to take some mild rock hits off-road. Sounds like the SOR's won't work. Bummer, the price was appealing!
