Does anyone have detailed instructions for replacing a steering wheel on an '03 LC? I just ordered a new one to replace the shredded old one. I am retaining the old airbag, just replacing the wheel. Thanks!

Post #3 - https://forum.ih8mud.com/100-series-cruisers/601738-how-remove-steering-wheel.html

I've never personally removed a wheel from a 100 before, but when you get to the point of the photo in post #3, loosen the nut holding the wheel on but do not remove it entirely. You should be able to wiggle the wheel back and forth pulling towards you, and when it lets go the nut still holding a few threads will keep you from smacking yourself in the face with the wheel.

You may or may not need a puller. Others will be able to better advise that. If so, you can rent one from your local parts house for free.

FYI, to find this answer, go to Search -> advanced search -> keyword "steering wheel" -> titles only -> search in forum "100 series cruisers" only. Pulls up a page of results, the thread I linked above was the 3rd or 4th one down.

Easy to swap the wheel and not necessary to disconnect the battery (according to some sources). Pop off the plastic covers on either side of the wheel. Back out the screws that retain the airbab module (the screws are retained in place). Pop off the airbag module and make note of how the wiring is routed. Disconnect the plugs that retain the airbag module. Remove the steering wheel nut. Pull off steering wheel and reverse the process to reinstall. 10 minutes tops.

I've never had to use a puller, simply back the nut off till its flush on the shaft. A few swift drifts from a brass hammer or hammer flush and pull at 12 and push at 6 back and forth and it releases from the splines.

Clock the wheel level with tray below gauges and remove.

Swap plastic and re install at same clock location. Then reverse the process.

With tools in hand I can do it anyplace without leaving the seat.

Note.

Steering wheel will not always be centered as the hub is cast the the frame and will be off a few degrees. You'll need to have it corrected.

Shane.
