I am getting noises from what I am guessing are the ball bearings within the steering wheel column. it usually occurs when I turn the wheel after just starting up the truck.

Has anyone encountered this issue?

Yes! Mine sounds almost like there's two ping pong balls moving around when I turn my wheel. Only happens just after starting when it's cold (<40 degrees).

I took the column apart a few weeks ago and it's coming from an enclosed box that appears to be housing some kind of plastic gears. My GX is under an extended factory warranty, so I'm going to take it in soon and see if they can fix it.

Right on. I'll let you know. I'll probably make an appointment next week or the week after xmas.

My GX is in the shop today and I received a message this afternoon saying that they were able to confirm the failure in the steering but they didn't have any in stock, so it'll have to wait until Monday. I'm not sure if that means they're replacing the entire column or what. I'll update on Monday.

just had the auto adjust disable this week while getting a new dash pad, it started making noise and I didn't like it anyways

It's not the tilt or adjustment mechanisms, it only occurs while turning the wheel...

I'll disable the auto adjust as soon as there are signs it's wearing. For now I still get a kick out of it. Such a polite and courteous truck!

The verdict is in....

It was the spiral cable clock spring. BlackCat gets the gold star . Just picked up the GX. No more ping pong balls!

Service advisor said it was common, but I feel like they say everything is common.

Edit: I found the part number for 12 bucks on eBay.

That's great! A quick google search says they either cost $11 new on Ebay... or $200 from Toyota..!

I'm taking her in tomorrow. Fingers crossed it's an $11 part + labor fix...

Thanks Arailt!

thanks @Arailt ! Part Ordered!

Right on guys. Happy to help!

$117 from Partsouq. Curious how your results are with an aftermarket part.

I have a bit of a squeaky sound sometimes -- wondering if it's the same thing...

Does this sound like your ping pong balls?

Yep. That's the ping pong balls

The OEM part looks to be around $200. If you're going to try aftermarket, the $12 part is where I'd start.

I wanted to double check before ordering the eBay part so I looked it up. The Lexus part # is 84306-60080 ($304.07 list price). The Toyota part appears to be the same, also at $304.07, and is listed for 2007-2014 FJ and 2006-2009 4Runner.

Older (2003-2005) 4Runners appear to use 84306-07040, but 2003 GX's still use 84306-60080.

Probably a non issue but I felt weird with an aftermarket part powering the airbag. I made an offer for $80 for an oem part on eBay and they accepted. Might be able to get it for less! Partsouq is $117 plus shipping.

I replaced the spiral cable in mine and it didn't change the squeaky noise I have. There's plastic on plastic rubbing in there somewhere...ugh.
