Need procedure for removing steering shaft from steering column on early '80 FJ40. Doing OEM power steering conversion and want to use my original column with donor steering shaft.

Thanks

Chad

early '80 ?

You talkn' before 8/'80 with one piece shaft or after with 2 piece??

All that is left is to remove the key mechanism from shaft (including the key barrel, the bearings, grey metal casing) . Does anyone know how to do this?

There is a release button underneath the barrel. You will need the to advance the key, while pushing this release with a wire rod. The barrel should pull right out. After removing the retainer (3 screws), you can use the steering shaft (c-clip left on) to pop-out this bearing. This may or may not have an adverse effect on the bearing. I would replace it regardless-its only like $8 list.

Here is the part # for the bearing: 90363-18038

why do i need to pop out the bearing? With the c-clip removed and the cylinder out I lightly tapped the cylinder housing towards the steering wheel end of the shaft and it appeared that the whole unit would just side off. If this happens I was just planning on repeating the same disassembly procedure on my column and then reassembling with the power steering shaft on my column.

thanks for link, but don't see any pics/exploded diagram view. Just part numbers. Not sure how that answers the question...
