i've had gm, scout and FJ60 boxes on my various rigs and i can tell you that the scout box is far and away the most powerful of the 3 with the 60 series being the least but the 60 does have the best street feel to me. i had a scout box on my FJ55 and it was almost scary at highway speed it just turned SO quick but i imagine it would be a great offroad box especially with hydro assist. it's a burly, bigass unit too
All of the boxes had the same PS pump?
A scout box and the GM box have the exact same piston size (I need to measure the 60 box and see how it compares). Unless you get the bigger piston "GM" sag box (Jeep J20 PS box).
There is no reason a Scout box should be scary on the road....

I got a lead on a scout box today. He says he has a scout II and a scout box. Is there a difference between the 2 of them. Should I try to get the pump with it? I wouldn't think that it would swap right in, I'd have to rig it up some how.
yes- gm pump's with all three....my scout box was off a '74 scout II iirc.....also the scout ps pump looks just like a gm pump but it has a really small pulley on it....i tried swaping that pulley onto a gm/agr pump one time and it made that pump scream like it was in horrible pain

different ratios? it wasn't exactly scary i drove it for 5 years 70mph all the time like that, it just wasn't very normal feeling....can't explain it but it just turned way quicker than i was happy/comfortable with.. the 60 box is in the same spot with the same geometry and the same p.s. box

This guys says $75 for box and pump. The original scout had no power steer apparently.

My dad was telling me that the scout steering was scary. I think it just has to do with a tight ratio, when compared to other boxes. No worries for me though.
I think it is a go on that scout II box and pump I found. He says he can't meet up until Monday to sell them. We'll see if it all works out, I'll keep everyone posted.
Does anyone know a good link on porting one of these scout pumps for hydro assist? It seems like a pretty general mod. I'm far more familiar with porting an Yota Ifs box, another reason I thought about using it.

Lots of parts out there but they are collected by fanatics. Here you need to find some one who has them. It looks like an fj60 box,....... I believe. Mounts outside the frame and the pitman arm points forward to the front bumper. Check out the link that Bustanutly posted for me there is a photo at the bottom of the page. BY THE WAY THANKS FOR THE LINK, BRO! It gives me a good Idea of where to port it! It is a general mod. for most boxes, once I tear it down I can decide where I want to port it.
I build valves mostly at work, I do lots of 1/4" npt(national pipe thread) ports. I did a Ifs box for a friend once, but the scout is very different. Not too hard, but the npt is a tapered thread. You need to engage the tap to the right depth to get it right! Not brain surgery, but parts done out of print done on a manual mill are easy to do make. I have seen some poor npt threads work, but there is a right way to do it. The fittings are designed specific, in order to hold the pressure with no leaks or failure. You need a gage to check them to ensure they are perfect!

Well I got another great deal! $80 for 2 scout II p.s. boxes, and a pump that looks new! One of the boxes is bound, the guy said it worked great when he pulled it. He let it set in a shop for over a year, it was indoors and covered, now it is bound. Maybe just a little rust or something, I can feel a little movement in it with my hands. He got another one for me after he realized the one he was selling me was bound. It will be great to have 2 boxes in case I mess up one when porting it out. Regardless, I'll bet that the binding in one, isn't serious and could be fixed easily.
I would say that $80 is a steal, for all of that.
These boxes are huge! "An fj-60 box on steroids" could almost be putting it lightly.
