Preg Check on LaCabra????

Andy,

If I hadn't seen La Cabra in the picture, considering the scrubs looks like your up to your elbows doing preg checks on cows and Alvaro is enjoying it.

Robmir,

After experiencing first hand the weather conditions in South America, I gotta say that the heat of the US deserts, specially in the south west is a lot worse than Venezuela.
In Venezuela, most of the heat is under high humidity conditions. In the Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada & California in the summer time temperatures can reach 49°C (120°F). With very, very low humidity (under 10%). Humidity in the air is what ultimately makes a cooling system work. With low humidity, a lot more air needs to go through the system to lower the temperature.

I think that a 80 Series equiped with the tow package would do just fine in South America.

Alvaro

Thanks Alvaro, by the way the thing that botters me more is how increase the air condition cooling specially when the vehicle is parked, as you recall how many hours sometimes we need to wait at the line to just take the ferry to our big island.

I got heavy tinted windows on the rear quarters and rear doors, and usually put a sun shield on the front windshield, keep my hand throtle rise the rpm to a little bit over 1000 RPM and is not enough for my kids in the second row and the 60 Qts Engel ref on. And my 80 is black !!!!!

Did you remember the long frame Land Rover from the sixties which had a aluminum second roof over the main roof allowing air to circulate between them, the ones used in Disney's Animal Kingdom looks like them :D

I was doing some seaching on pwr steeting cooling and ran across this older thread from Alvaro. Question: is it really necessary to put the cooler for the pwr steering pump in the path of the radiator? My thinking comes from the notion that most of the heat (energy) transferred to the pump fluid occurs at slow, crawl speed when we are maneuvering over obstacles with the 34's and larger tires. So, if this assumption is true, you do not have relatively 'hi-speed ' air to pass through the PS cooler. Then, could you simply double the surface area of the cooler - whatever means you wish - and locate the PS cooler nearby but not necessarily in the path of the radiator. Just a thot...

anyone know of other junkyard candidates with a larger power steering reservoir?

I'm too lazy to add a cooler (and I've only got 31's) but it is hot here and I think that extra fluid could make the pump/steering box live a longer, happier life.

Phil,

The reason the PS cooler is in front of the radiator is to take advantage of the air draw made by the steering fan. Sure you could put the PS cooler somewhere else, but you won't get as much air flow at low speeds.

Alvaro

I haven't done this mod yet and have no data other than mine runs hot. In most of the pumps & boxes that I have resealed, the o-rings and seals are hard and cracked. The stock seals appear to be Butyl, it's max operating temp is ~240F, when it's exceeded the seals become hard. So cooling should greatly increase their life, along with the fluid.

This cooler maybe a case of bigger isn't always better. The fluid needs to run at operating temp, for most automotive fluids it's generally accepted to be in the 160-180F range. Cold fluid doesn't lubricate as well, is harder to pump and doesn't release trapped air as well, leading to cavitation, gowning. If you have started a vehicle in very cold weather, you have probably experienced an extreme case of this, sluggish, stiff steering and cavitation gowning when it's forced.

In a hot desert type or more temperate climate, a bigger cooler probably isn't going to be much of an issue. But in a climate where there is that nasty white stuff on the ground it could be an issue, taking much longer to warm up or never getting to operating temp.

There are a couple of ways to fix the problem; The "techie" way is to add a bypass thermostat, set at ~160F, so that the cooler is bypassed until the fluid is warm. The simple way is to mount the cooler under the hood, where it's in the airflow from the radiator fan. The cooling fan output actuality does a great job of regulating the temp, this method is used by a bunch of manufactures, ether a line loop or small cooler mounted on the front of the motor, where the fan blows on it.

Tools, good post.

Alvorob, can you please update your link for your install? When i click on it it takes me to your home page, but don't see a link anywhere for the PS cooler/reservoir upgrade.

Thanks from someone who is about to tackle the PS groaning and leaking issues.

I installed a tiny cooler from NAPA during the Previa hose installation project. I didn't have any moans/groans, just did it as a PM mod.

got picks of how you hooked it up to the reservior, just in line with the low pressure
reservoir hose? Did it lower the temps? Looks a tad small to do much?/

(I tried to go to alvrorb's website to look at his set-up, but it froze my computer, sucked
the MB's down to 4 !!)

Thank you sir.
