I have not pulled it apart yet to take a gander but I was noticing how much side to side play me steering column has. Up and down is not an issue (tilt still works just fine) but side to side is actually kinda disorientating... I can probably shift the steering wheel/column close to an inch laterally..

are there bushings on the column itself???

waaa???

Whats moving? The column and housing or the wheel and shaft inside the housing?

Unless the bolts securing the column to the dash are loose, my bet is the tilt mechanisms are falling apart. In my experience it's just screws loose, nothing really worn out.

Column and the housing. Very little up and down movement.. LOTS of side to side movement.. I'll check the bolts (easy enough to do)

It would suck if the tilt mechanism is dying..

of the three bolts that hold the steering column to the tilt feature, two of them were loose, and the third was missing the head off of the bolt!!

All fixed and nice and tight..
:D

Mace I am 99% sure that those bolts are special sheer bolts that are meant to brake the heads off in an accident. So if you replace them with some standard bolts you will loose that meager safety margin.

Here is a picture I had. That is good you got it tightened with out having to pull it out. It is actually not too bad to pull out if you need to do it. I changed the u-joint on mine.

Interesting, the head that sheared off is the one circled in red in the pic. It does not look to have a bolt head on it.

:hhmm:

As for the safety features... This 60 is wayy less safe than that lol :)

That is weird. I will look at my other pictures tonight. That is the original column is far as I know and had never been pulled until I did it.
