The Club "makes" about $3 on dues. This money has been used in the past to host cookouts, buy some raffle prizes, add a few items to the club library yadda yadda yadda. The majority of the money in the club coffers has been put there by generous donations from fellow members who wish to remain nameless. Based on yearly signups we have been able to afford the yearly club permit without issue. The permit that we have been receiving and using is actually a single event permit that is not dated in any way and by rights is only supposed to be used as a one time deal. The former mgmt at the STL has always just turned their head and let us do as we see fit with it. Unfortunately the new MGMT has either gotten wise or just decided to use the rules as written. Kinda like that cop that decides one day that he's gonna nail every person that drives 1mph over any posted limit. While not cool it's the law and he can enforce it as he sees fit.

I have only ever been asked to show my permit once (at AZROCKS) and I didn't have it on me at the time. I expected the ticket, but was happily surprised to not get one. I also make a point of going to the STL department every year and plunking down the $20 for a family permit in addition to my club permit.

As of right now it's up in the air. I'm researching other options but am still unsure of what's going to happen. It's also quite possible that the next time I go down there, I'll get a different story.

Thanks B. I was curious what we do with our club $$.

I just checked the STL website and found out that the office in Tucson is downtown. If I can't get a permit thru the web or mail I guess I'll go without. Besides being completely on the other side of town, downtown Tucson sucks a$$ for parking and getting around.

Never mind, I read it again and the permit has to go thru the PHX office, so I'll do the mail in thing.

Everybody in the club get a hunting license, mountain lion tag and carry a gun in your rig. Actively scouting or hunting is a free pass to STL last time I checked. Of course the last time I checked was a year or two ago. Then again, I can count on one hand all the times I've needed an STL permit in the last 5 years. Not to many.

Is there a map anyone can post that shows all the STLand in the state? I have no idea where any is except this small piece where I pig hunt east of the Rincons.

Last time I was out in reddington got stopped by the sheriff and we had a great discussion about this....I told him i had a hunting license and he said it only applied during hunting season???? WTF what if I'm scouting to find hunting areas..I think that should be justification alone to be able to be on state land trust..I thought of this after speaking with him, so not sure if it works...but doesnt that make sense?? He gave me a sheet on info for the permit, I need to scan it so we're all on the same page, I was just glad to see someone out there informing individuals of the rules, since its absolute mayhem usually.

Buy a mountain lion tag. Lion season is all year.

According to STL your hunting license is only good if you are actively hunting, scouting is not covered. I've tried to explain that preseason scouting is part of the sport of hunting but they didn't seem to get the point.

You don't even need a tag. You can hunt any "small" game year round without a tag. It would be good to have a weapon in your vehicle to prove it. This could be a hand gun, pellot gun, rifle, slingshot, shotgun, bow, etc.
When I am out on State Trust land, I am always "hunting" for Coyote and/or rabbits. Season is open year round!
Some state land is close to residential areas that are designated as a limited weapon/rimfire or limited weapon/shotgun so the .22 or shotgun are usually good weapons to add to your off-road checklist.
