So who has them and how can I get mine before it actually runs out ;)

Get one from Phil this friday at the meet.

Are we back to getting state wide permits? Last I heard they were issued only for specific areas of use.

Howdy! I don't know if any progress has been made on the Copperstate permit. I do know that other clubs are having a very difficult time with the Az State Trust Land Department. Must have been a change in management or policy up there. Maybe they are hoping we will all pop for individual permits so they can increase their revenues. They want clubs to list a complete schedule of events for the whole year on the application. DUH!!!! I don't kow of any club that could do that. John

Isn't the annual plan for trail runs to be drafeted in accordance w/ CSC bylaws? Oh, wait...

Creating a complete schedule of events for the whole year is not difficult at all. My question is do we have to stick with the scheduled events?

That's not really the dificult part. The one million dollar liability insurance policy that the club is required to hold in order to host these events is. That along with the fact that in order to hold a one million dollar liability policy the club MUST attain a NFP status which would mean some type of incorporation including a BOD yadda yadda yadda. All of that political s*** that we agreed not to get involved with from day one.

This whole thing has had my head spinning for weeks trying to figure out how we as a club can legally hold and offer some type of state trust land permit to our members. It's quickly becoming a reality that we will loose this all together unless there is some change in the management policies at the state land department. Unfortunately that is exactly what has gotten us into that position.

I am hoping that this post will insight a lengthy discussion where we weigh our options and someone by some miracle comes up with a good action plan that doesn't include this club incorporating.

Everybody in the club get a hunting license, mountain lion tag and carry a gun in your rig. Actively scouting or hunting is a free pass to STL last time I checked. Of course the last time I checked was a year or two ago. Then again, I can count on one hand all the times I've needed an STL permit in the last 5 years. Not to many.

Is there a map anyone can post that shows all the STLand in the state? I have no idea where any is except this small piece where I pig hunt east of the Rincons.

There is an interactive map too

From SLT website

"You do not need an ASLD Recreational Permit if you are actually hunting or fishing on State land with a valid hunting or fishing license issued by the Arizona Game and Fish Department. All other recreational activities require an ASLD Recreational Permit. Commercial recreational activities or recreational events that charge a participation fee, i.e. hot air balloon rides, jeep tours, hayrides, horseback rides, bicycle races, equestrian events, ultra light aircraft, etc., may be considered under an ASLD Special Land Use Permit, but not under an ASLD Recreational Permit."

However, considering that an individual permit can be obtained for $15.00 and is a blanket permit for all State Trust land that is open to use and a hunting license starts at $32.25, I don't think it would be cost effective to go that route.

Howdy! I'd say that MoGas has pretty well nailed it. I have bought mine a long time ago. Can do on line. Family permit for multiple rigs and drivers is like $25. Still a bargain. I have never had to show mine to anyone, but I try to keep current. Hmmm, time to go check my expiration date. They USED to email me a reminder, but I have not gotten one in a long time. Hmmm, now where did I put that rascal???? John

Sweet - i already have a current fishing license. :bounce2: I just need to toss some rods in the back and only wheel near water.

So what does the club do with the collected dues and raffle money anyway? Do we use all of it for STL permits? Do we donate to an OHV group like BRC or similar? How much has a club STL permit cost us per year? I'm just curious what we do with all the collected money and if it wouldn't just be better for all of us to get our own permit if we feel the need and maybe lower club dues, if we're not really doing much with the money.

I'm just thinking out loud here, not trying to ruffle feathers. I don't make it to many meetings so I don't really know what gets discussed or planned unless you guys post it up.

IIRC our cost for the permit was relatively insignificant, inexpensive and allowed us to be legal supporters of the state trust program with, minimal investment and paperwork. I have no problem with them slightly increasing the fees, if that money goes to improve the program. But if we are required to have insurance, etc I don’t see why we need to support it.

The only place that I frequent where it’s “needed” is Florence Junction and there it’s not really needed for the wheeling areas. The only state trust land is from the highway to the cattle guard on Cottonwood Canyon, it’s legal to cross state trust land on the road, the permit is only needed if you stop, camp, etc on the land. If you come in on Montana Mountain Rd you never cross state trust land or if you come in on Cottonwood Canyon and don’t stop until after the cattle guard you don’t need the permit.

The only reason that I see for the permit is for AZRocks, their camp spot is on state trust land if you want to attend, hang out in camp or spend the night, you need a permit. If someone has a contact in AZ TTORA, lobbying to move the camp to the big camp site on the north side of the road closer to the mountain would be a good move. It would eliminate a couple of miles of dusty Cottonwood Canyon driving each way on each trail run and put us outside of state trust land, so no permit is needed.

We have a lot of STL up here, so it is beneficial to get a permit if you want to go wheeling around Flagstaff.

We do club runs?
