Guys - I have got back into fixing my 74 FJ40 with an F engine. I tried to start it this week after 3 months or so and got it going. It has spark and fuel to the carburetor. It catches but shuts off after 10 or 20 seconds. I took the air cleaner off of the carb and I hear a hissing sound from the carb as I push in the accelerator. I had the choke fully open and fully closed. Same result.

If it is a vacuum leak, how would I know? How would I fix it? I am also guessing a carb problem - bad air fuel mixture? Not sure really.

Any help appreciated. Thanks.

look at the fuel filter sound as if its running out of gas you wait and it restarts right?? then dies again etc.

So, it just "shuts off" after 10 or 20 seconds? Does it sputter & cough or really just shut off? Can you do anything to keep it running? like give it more gas pedal?
Almost sounds sorta electrical if it just "shuts off"...Ignition switch? loose wire on the coil?

Yes - just shuts off - after loosing a little steam. It definitely tries to keep going. Yes, if you try to give it gas py pressing the gas pedal, it shuts off even quicker.

is it a Stock Carb, Spray some starting fluid around the base or the carb to find your vacum leak,

first off the literacy in this thread is horrible......lol

I know you say it has the same result, but when you pull your choke does anything change at all? Do you see any fuel dripping into the carb at all? If not i think you need to clean your carb throughly

I assume you will gets ome bubbling os something after the starte fluid is sprayed at the base of the carb? Or will there be someting else??

Something else...this is a check for a vacuum leak. If the RPMs increase as you spray around the carb, there's your vacuum leak.
But, you say if you hit the gas pedal, the rig dies even faster, I would suspect fuel delivery problem. Keep a close eye on the porthole window in the carb as it dies...
the I'm thinking either it's running dry, or perhaps it's even flooding the engine. One or the other.

P.S. I don't think your TLCA number is really 12.

prove it....:D
You prove it. I gotz a card that sez my number is 2509.
And I remember threads about lowest member numbers...I think Ige is lower than mine, not many others...I don't remember your name being tossed about at all...

i am holding in my hand a card that has 0012 on it....

I'm new here but I may be able to help. During start "ie" cranking, the ballast resister is bypassed allowing full voltage to the coil. When you release the key back to run votage has to pass through the resister. Check its resistance or bypass it with a jumper just to see if it stays running. If the resistance is high or it stays running when bypassed it's no good. Hope this helps.
