Hey all,

I picked up a new-to-me 99 LX470 with 250k as daily, and on most cold starts, I get a grinding sound right as the engine fires. From what I've read, this is pretty cut-and-dry symptoms of a bad starter that isn't retracting correctly, however if anyone has experience otherwise I'd love to know.

I also get the below grinding noise when accelerating from stop. Nothing seems out of sorts on CVs, driveshafts, front diff, etc, and seems similar in sound to the starter noise as well. The noise goes away when I lift off throttle. Any ideas?

Videos below, thanks in advance.

Could be a simple as CAT shields loose. Most just put a large worm gear clamp around them.
Could be a cracked flex plate.
Could even be any number of bearings or fan clutch (although doesn't sound like it), in front of engine.

Kind of waste of time to just list possibles, as just a guessing game with so little to go on. As you need to isolate as to location first, which a stethoscope and GO -Pro are very useful tools for doing so..
