According to my parts microfiche, the "starter relay" on the 60 series is only applicable on the diesel engine models (Bj, HJ). Therefore, it would stand to reason that the FJ62 does not have a starter relay because it is gasoline, not diesel. There is an "ignition" relay, however,

The ignition relay is under the dash next to the fuse box.

There is no starting relay on the Fj62's. The two relays that I can recall having anything to do with starting are the circuit opening relay and the EFI relay. The circuit opening relay is in the passenger side front kick panel and the EFI relay is mounted to the passenger side fender wall about mid way.

You also have the ECu (computer) which is located under the glove box. If your check engine light comes on when you start your car then the ECu is working fine.

Hey Randy, still dealing with this problem of not starting. The check engine light comes on and my mechanic is stumped. We're going to go ahead and put in a push start then at least it's a little more sure with starting and I won't get stranded...I hope. Thanks for the info, Ryan

I would suggest fixing the truck before fixing it with an upgrade.

What exactly is the problem?

You may have old corroded contacts on the ignition switch. Unscrewing the steering column cover and cleaning them might help. What are your exct symptoms?

No, I don't want to use the push start as an "upgrade" but, being that it's my dd I really can't be stranded. I want to put this in and then start to do more research on the problem. What's been checked/done is a new starter, cleaned all grounds (except for the one on the engine mount, can't get to it), cleaned the NSS (want to get it bypassed) and new ignition switch. When I got to start the rig, turn the key and nothing. All lights on the dash come on and the batt shows 12v. This started out happening once every year and now, it's once the engine starts to get hot. when it won't start I've tried moving the shifter back and forth but nothing. So, I have to use the jumpwire from the starter to the battery. So, it's not an upgrade but something to keep it going until I can figure the problem.

It could be your EFI relay geting hot. My 91 FJ80 with the 3F had this problem. I did some research and switched out the efi relay which has a metal housing to one I had in my parts pile that had a plastic housing. It disipates the heat better. no more problems.:)

could be a similar heat issue some where in your electrical system. I have had only two real starting issues with landcruisers, the hot efi relay and the soleniod contacts in the gear reduction starter being worn out.

What have you metered other than the battery? Just changing parts can get exspensive.

I would run a test hot wire directly to your starter and see if that makes the starter turn over. If it does turn then you are not getting enough power to the starter.

A good mechanic should be able to diagnose general systems to pinpoint the problem. Simply replacing parts usually does not solve the problem.

Please do not bypass your NSS. That is asking for a huge problem in the future and it is unsafe.

I know it's unsafe for the NSS but I always make sure that I'm in park when starting and stopping the engine. If that's the problem then I would rather bypass it then have to pay $300 for it. Where would the test wire go? from the starter to where?

battery, just touch it on the battery to see if the starter moves.
