I replaced the contacts in my starter but still have the problem. The battery is also new. When it is cranked for the first time the starter doesn't turn super fast.

After driving for a while when it is hot, I can turn off my truck, and if i try to restart it immediately after turning it off, the starter acts like the battery is dead. Turns over very slowly.

If I let it sit for a while it spins fine.

I've installed a relay between the ignition and starter so it is getting the power.

Any suggestions/tips would be appreciated.

Check the connector plugs and male/female part of the harness for hot spots. After years of use the connections like to get dirty and don't conduct as well causing a huge amount of resistance. Clean them out, dielectric grease and give it another shot.

I been slowly restoring my truck and been having the starter click when i turn the key .. New battery and Post connectors I read here that it might be a contact wear issue I removed the mud guard and wiggled the Pos, Harness .. Starts up fine now ( not driving it yet ) I know i have to replace the Connectors .. But i also read you need to replace the plunger

So ya i think your problem might lay in the plugs area

Voltage drop

Check for voltage drop between your positive wire going to starter also check your ground wire having good contact in all areas where ground is needed specially the on e going to the block.where did you hook up the relay?:D

Did you tear down the starter and inspect the armature for hot spots or burnt marks?

I installed the relay between the wires going to the starter . I hooked them to the relay, and new wires from relay to starter,

I replaced the contacts in the starter, but didn't look at the armature.

All grounds are clean, and no corrosion in the wires.

Found the problem.

Two of the magnets were in pieces, and one of the bearings was starting to lock up. not bad for 285k

Bought one from Napa, and kept this one to rebuild.
