My starter is getting stuck on, so I'm planning to replace the starter contacts on my truck sometime next week. I obtained a 2.2 kw starter that I'm going to replace the contacts and plunger in then replace my current starter with that one, and then I'm going to replace the same in the removed starter. I don't have the press needed so I'm planning on "burrowing" the bench top press they sell at Northern Tool unless someone in the area has one I could use for ten minutes or so. I'm planning to replace the fuel filter at the same time, and if anyone would be willing to help with these things it'd be much appreciated. Driving to Greenville is no problem, and Charlotte isn't out of the question either. I'd be more than happy to provide  for the project, and pay you for your time. If anyone knows if there's a difference in assembly between the 2.2 kw and the 1.4 kw starters that would help because I only have the FSM for my '96.

press?

uh...i diddent use a press when i did mine

To do the contacts and plunger you simply open up the starter housing and unscrew the contacts, plunger is direct fit...no press needed.

The FSM says you need a hand press to press something with a wood block when you're torquing something else. That by the way is an exact quote. I don't have the FSM in front of me, but I'm pretty sure its on George's write up for doing the repair. If it's not needed then that's even better.

By the way, my daughter's favorite picture book so far is the FSM. When it's time to read "stories" she goes to my bookcase and points at the big heavy dirty book and says 'beesh', or please, and we read about the evil head gasket and other tales. It also makes a good coloring book.:D

No need for press, I think I used a block to hold contacts like http://www.george4wd.taskled.com/starter.html ...
if its starting to stick, DON'T put off changing it.
FYI you might want to check into the Upstate cruisers ....see link in mine and Dan's sigs.

Thanks, I'm still waiting for the parts from CDan and my other vehicle, a Jeep, is broken down. Thanks for the info about the Upstate Cruisers. I'll check it out, since I'm down here for school for a while.
