These are the parts numbers I have:
Kit 1 28226-54412
Kit 2 28226-72010
Plunger 28235-54380
Gasket for Switch Cover 28175-54380

However, according to the parts sites and diagrams I'm seeing, these parts are only for 98-2002. Looks like from 2003+ there's a different starter and there's no rebuild kits are available.

I have seen the other threads on starter contacts job and parts and so far the people I see that have done the rebuild had 98-2002 model years.

Has anyone done a rebuild on a 5sp 03+ using the parts numbers from model years 98-02 listed above?

Thanks,
Art

I called cruiserdan at American Toyota, he hooked me up with 28226-50070, 28226-50080, and 28235-54380 for the contacts and plunger. The only number I really need to know is 800-432-6668.

I was told by American Toyota that the rebuild kits are officially for model years up to 8/2002 but not beyond, and that it may or may not fit with later starters.

I see that there are 3 different starters across the model years. The model years below are according to Toyotapartszone although I found discrepencies with other sites about whether 28100-50100 was only for 2000-2002 or 2000-2004:
28100-50070 (1998.01-2000.03)
28100-50100 (2000.03-2004.03
28100-50101 (2004.03+)

All are 12V 2KW. The starter contact rebuild kits were different for 98-2000 compared to 2000-2004 (or 2000-2002 depending on which source).
Since 2004+ have a different starter part number that leads me to believe the starter contacts and plunger from earlier starters won't work.

Can anyone confirm that they rebuilt an 04+ starter using the 2000-2002 (or 2000-2004) rebuild kits?

There was a thread about this recently, give it a search.

searched and searched again - no dice on a thread that confirms rebuilding 04+ starter. The starter assembly and magnetic switch assembly does have a different part number for the 04+ from what i see.

Given the effort to tear into this and the part number discrepencies i'd prefer to know someone else has done it on 04+.

I did see from various posts that new denso starters are not available, only remans, and that numerous people had denso remans fail on them. So I'm starting to wonder if I should just get an aftermarket starter - not certain but seems like the starter might be a case where non-oem is a better bet? (At least one board member had luck with Bosch, more than a few had reman'd denso's crap out)....

My first post was a bit confused in terms of model years so I'd like to consolidate and clarify for others down the line. According to Toyotapartszone data, here's how I would group the parts:

For Model Year 1998.01-2000.03:
Kit 1 28226-54412 (1998.01-2000.03)
Kit 2 28226-72010 (1990.01-2000.03)
Plunger 28235-54380 (1993.08-2002.08)

For Model Year 2000.03-2002.08:
28226-50070 (2000.03-2002.08)
28226-50080 (2000.03-2002.08)
28235-54380 (1993.08-2002.08)

And then based on starter and magnetic switch part numbers, it looks like 02-04 falls under the 2000-2002 part numbers, but 04+ may or may not have compatible rebuild kits/plunger...
