This SST has been discontinued for a while and when I happened to come across one, I jumped on it. It's possible to setup the pinion depth without the SST by trial and error; however, I'd prefer to focus this thread on the tool itself and how the service manual calls for its use.

Here's where the SST is referenced in the factory service manual:

SELECTION OF SHIMS AND SPACER

Drive Pinion Positioning.

1. Mount the SST [09530-35010] and bearings as shown in the diagram and tighten the nut at 2-3 kg-m (14-22 ft-lb) torque.

2. Set a dial gauge on top of the SST, and measure the lowest position of the side bearing installation surface on the differential carrier. At this position, set the dial gauge pointer to zero.

3. Remove the dial gauge and set it on a surface plate.

If the gauge pointer stays at zero, the shim now being used is satisfactory.

If the gauge point indicates on the minus side, replace with a shim that is thinner by that amount.

If the gauge pointer registers on the plus side, replace with a shim that is thicker by that amount.

Adjusting Shim Thickness

Part No. Thickness mm (in.)
90564-68001 0.25 (0.010)
90564-68002 0.3 (0.012)
90564-68003 0.35 (0.014)
90564-68004 0.4 (0.016)
90564-68005 0.45 (0.018)

I found some reference to the cylinder shaped tool pictured above to the right of SST 09530-35010. It's called a Master Gauge. It looks like you can determine the shim thickness for the pinion using some feeler gauges instead of a dial indicator. I'm feeling even better about my find.

Setting up a differential using the procedure mentioned in the previous post.

Very nice.

You should send this off to @reevesci and have him re-engineer it for you and then you sell to MUD.

I know at least 10 people who would buy a set without asking how much it costs. I know I would be happy to pay up front for a reproduction of this SST.

Nice work.

@beno I don’t mind having reproductions made... going to be a while though; I have 2 more differentials I’m rebuilding for a friend and 2 of my own I need to get to afterwards. PM me... I may be able to set you up with one.

Always game for remaking these tools. I've got three SSTs reproductions now and I'd be interested in this one as well.

Did you test afterwards ( not that I doubt about Mr T SST / engineering ) just curious about the " perfect " R&P set ..

Hello there! I wanted to get a hold of possibly the drawings so I can try and reproduce the parts with a machinist friend of mine.
Any chance you have drawings/specs for the parts that make up the whole set?
Thanks!
