SRS Warning Light is On...Code 31

My SRS lights came on this morning, after the truck had not been driven for a couple days.
I checked the SRS Error Code and it threw a code 31 I believe.
I tried but could not clear the code using the code scanner.
Anyone has similar problem please advise as to how I go about fixing it?
BTW my truck is a '96 FZJ80 and it only has one horn pad airbag.

I tried resetting the code using the Tc/AB/Gnd paperclip method, the ABS light blinked but the SRS warning light came back on.
I then used another code scanner to pull the code, it read code 31 and it said the SRS sensor/controller was at fault. I tried to clear the code with the scanner, it stopped the SRS warning light for a few seconds, but it came back on after that.
Where should I start to look to locate the possible faults in this situation? What are the possible causes for this to happen?

My battery went dead, as I was out of town for several weeks. On starting the rig, the code came up. I tried a number of times but could not get the code to clear, so my SRS ECU was deemed dead.

Try the paperclip method below a few times, as it took me at least twice with the new ECU to get it to take-hold. The whole ground within one second part is key.

1) Get two separate longish wires (another SST!)
2) At the DTC put one wire in the Tc terminal and one in the AB terminal
3) Turn the ignition to on or acc for 6 seconds (leave it in on or acc)
4) Go to the wires in the DTC and do the following
a) Tc to ground for 1 second, remove
b) AB to ground for 1 second, remove
c) Tc to ground for 1 second, remove
d) AB to ground for 1 second, remove
e) Tc to ground for several seconds (5 according to the FSM)
5) ABS light should flash rapidly and reset

Note, you need to switch the wires quicky (.2 seconds?) but that is easy to do.

Cyclosteve: when you say above to switch the wires quickly, does that mean to alternate which one is grounded rapidly with no pause inbetween??

Yes, ground one at a time, and very quickly alternate. I am sure that Mr. T makes special SST which pulses each alternately to ground, but this also does work manually.

I might have done this slower than required. However, at the time when I did that, I grounded the Tc and AB alternately following the reset instructions and eventually had the ABS light blinking without resetting the airbag light.

For those, who did not suceed with slower actions, did you get the ABS light to blink and still failed to get the airbag module to reset? Or, blinking is a sign of sucessful reset but the light came back on beause it detects the same problem again.

Looking for a little help. 97 FZJ80 with the SRS light on. It is throwing a 31 code. I try to clear the code and reset the system using the method listed above (alternating Tc an Ab to ground), but the code does not clear. The SRS light goes off for 5 seconds or so, then starts flashing the 31 code.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

If the light goes out for 5sec that means you have a hard fault. Replace the items deemed faulty by code 31 according to the service manual.

My airbag light is on and I tried this method for resetting, but I get nothing. No ABS lights flashing or anything. When I jump tc and E1 I get the code for 31, but when I try to reset it, I get nothing. Is there something that should confirm that a reset has been attempted?

Hey, guys. I'm in the same situation here. Haven't gotten the SRS to reset, but when I pulled the unit, I can't get it to show consistent voltage at the connector for the main unit that lives in the center console. Anybody else have this problem during the check procedure? Any help is appreciated. I'm going to try the alternating grounding tomorrow. I just don't want to disable something and then actually have non-working airbags.

Thanks
