Excuse me for being a newbie, but I was wondering if there are definite indicators that let you know when springs need to be replaced (if so, wha are they?), or is this something that periodically needs to be done (if so, how often?). Thanks!
 
As long as they aren't broken/cracked/etc you can run them as long as you please. It's all up to you.

If your springs are negative arched, S shaped, or have broken leaves it is time to replace.
 
Howdy! Normally, the ends of the springs should be several inches higher from the ground than the middle where they attach to the axle. All four springs should have about the same amount of curve. Lots of folks replace springs with "lift springs" so they have clearance for larger tires. John

What is a good way to discern between normal and lift springs?
