Is there a better grade shaft available for that case Johnny?
Never boring is it?![]()
This was supposed to be the upgraded spud shaft for the Dana300.
And nope, never boring

Another great STR. In true Traylor fashion never to arrive in the same vehicle or in 3 out of 4 occasions even a Land Cruiser!!! Nice to meet a bunch of new faces and to see others I have not seen in years. Man time flies. In case I don't make it out to another one I'll be hosting a STR west coast version around 2020 and you are all welcome to attend.
Oh, it looks like it snapped right on the cut line on the splines. Perhaps a machining issue.
The story doesn't stop there. Trying to leave and the battery died on me. Got boosted off and was backing up and backed into a car. Yay. Stopped at Napa to check and my alternator is shot. Thankfully warranty bought me a new battery. Picked up a second to try and make it home since there were no alternators around. Leaving Manteo now. Prayers appreciated.
Looks all too familiar, doesn't it...Oh, it looks like it snapped right on the cut line on the splines. Perhaps a machining issue.
Did I mention as I was trying to cut my grass that was neglected for almost 10 days, the pulley on the mowing deck broke? yup, so I had to push mow most of the yard....Yup...keep piling on Karma, you hit like a beotch and I can take it. lol.
With all this said, I am ready for next years STR. Consider this me signing up already.I cannot say enough about how much I love this club. We had such a great time.
So Johnny, not planning on Moab next year?
Looks like that shaft was a real piece of doodoo. The way it sheared off like that makes me think it's two pieces. At least thats what the pic shows. Not strong at all. Is it supposed to be a single machined shaft?
No, moab is not gonna happen I don't think, not unless I can get a tow rig and trailer by then.
The spud/input shaft is one piece from the manufacturer. It has done well until now. I'm thinking that the input shaft was somehow compromised by a previous break.
Sorry for your loss man. It looks almost as if too much heat treatment may have doomed that one. By increasing the hardness by such a large degree it decreased the toughness and made it more brittle.
Now that's an interesting idea. I wonder if this is an affect of using this shaft in a daily driver instead of a trailer queen![]()
Almost certainly not. The heat treatment process involves critical temperatures upwards of 1800F. If the failure was due to the metal being too brittle it was from the manufacturing process.
Unfortunately the inquiry to the manufacturing process was a dead end. I told the guy at JB what happened and he said "wow, never heard of that breaking before". I asked about power levels, other things, maybe I was using it wrong, to which he had no answer. I asked about a warranty and he said "everything has its limit".
I need a CNC lathe, a CNC mill and a tempering furnace so that I can do this **** myself.
That's a sad response from JB. If you were bound up in a set of rocks and pouring on the torque I could see "voiding a warranty" but open/open diffs on the sand is ridiculous.
I agree 100% "Everything has it's limits" is not an acceptable answer. "Never heard of that breaking before" should lead them to want the part back to examine it at the very least. In their shoes I would at least offer you a replacement at a drastic price reduction. All in all it's just good business on their part.
