Is there a better grade shaft available for that case Johnny?
Never boring is it? :)

This was supposed to be the upgraded spud shaft for the Dana300.

And nope, never boring :D

Oh, it looks like it snapped right on the cut line on the splines. Perhaps a machining issue.

Another great STR. In true Traylor fashion never to arrive in the same vehicle or in 3 out of 4 occasions even a Land Cruiser!!! Nice to meet a bunch of new faces and to see others I have not seen in years. Man time flies. In case I don't make it out to another one I'll be hosting a STR west coast version around 2020 and you are all welcome to attend.

I'll be there, can't guarantee Bonnie but I can just rent a Passport or an Forester or somethink.
Just let me know in time to get it on my calendar.
Any events >5000km from one of our homes has to be scheduled at least one sun cycle in advance.

Completely agreed! I'm trying to get in contact with JBConversions to talk about it. Looking at the pic of the Advance Adapters version, it has the same neck-down at the end of the splines.

I put over 1k miles on my truck with this.

The story doesn't stop there. Trying to leave and the battery died on me. Got boosted off and was backing up and backed into a car. Yay. Stopped at Napa to check and my alternator is shot. Thankfully warranty bought me a new battery. Picked up a second to try and make it home since there were no alternators around. Leaving Manteo now. Prayers appreciated.

ok so to finalize....after the jump start we let it run a few minutes. As I was backing out it kinda lost power and recovered but it was too late. Backed right into a parked car. Went back inside and talked to the owner, traded info, etc. Rolled out and headed to the Napa in Manteo to get the battery/alternator checked. hooked up and battery was showing very dead. lol. Thankfully it was under warranty. I had shared some of the story with the guy so he offered to put it in so I didn't have to unpack and pull my tools. With all that happened I was grateful. So new battery is in and truck won't fire, just turns over. Never had a starting issue like that before. So I get to looking and the new version of the battery had the terminals swapped and the guy hooked it up backwards. unbelievable. So he gets it installed properly, replace a handful of blown fuses and truck fires right up. rechecks and the alternator is showing bad. Of course none in stock. I've wanted to do a dual battery setup for a while so I just buy a second battery and plan on just running to Raleigh where they had an alternator in stock.

So, we hit the road keeping it under 60. finally make it to Raleigh with Johnny waiting. I had the guy run the tester again since it was a different shop and didn't want to hear any warranty BS. Guy hooks up and the negative terminal is loose. The guy at Napa didn't tighten it up all the way. So the moral of the story and hard lesson learned is I don't care how tired you are and how deep your tools are packed, You never, ever let someone else work on your junk. There are a lot of things I should have caught but with all the stress and things that had gone wrong I took the basics for granted. So end result we made it home from Raleigh ok. My wipers are still blowing fuses so I have to pull the schematics and start isolating the issue but I'll get that.

Did I mention as I was trying to cut my grass that was neglected for almost 10 days, the pulley on the mowing deck broke? yup, so I had to push mow most of the yard....Yup...keep piling on Karma, you hit like a beotch and I can take it. lol.

With all this said, I am ready for next years STR. Consider this me signing up already. I cannot say enough about how much I love this club. We had such a great time.

Yeah it does, mine was rear output shaft though. I drove it home in front wheel drive for about 200 miles! Toyota tough

Dude, lol. Does it ever stop?

Could not agree more. I am so in.

Okay, it's time for me to fess up. Those of us who couldn't go on STR didn't set out to target Eric, Eric and Johnny, but the club's only LC voodoo doll is white so they had to receive our wrath.

So Johnny, not planning on Moab next year?

Looks like that shaft was a real piece of doodoo. The way it sheared off like that makes me think it's two pieces. At least thats what the pic shows. Not strong at all. Is it supposed to be a single machined shaft?

No, moab is not gonna happen I don't think, not unless I can get a tow rig and trailer by then.

The spud/input shaft is one piece from the manufacturer. It has done well until now. I'm thinking that the input shaft was somehow compromised by a previous break.

Since you're just running a 4BT some JB Weld and off you go.

Sorry for your loss man. It looks almost as if too much heat treatment may have doomed that one. By increasing the hardness by such a large degree it decreased the toughness and made it more brittle.

Now that's an interesting idea. I wonder if this is an affect of using this shaft in a daily driver instead of a trailer queen :hhmm:

Almost certainly not. The heat treatment process involves critical temperatures upwards of 1800F. If the failure was due to the metal being too brittle it was from the manufacturing process.

Unfortunately the inquiry to the manufacturing process was a dead end. I told the guy at JB what happened and he said "wow, never heard of that breaking before". I asked about power levels, other things, maybe I was using it wrong, to which he had no answer. I asked about a warranty and he said "everything has its limit".

I need a CNC lathe, a CNC mill and a tempering furnace so that I can do this s*** myself.

That's a sad response from JB. If you were bound up in a set of rocks and pouring on the torque I could see "voiding a warranty" but open/open diffs on the sand is ridiculous.

Still glad it resulted in an epic Ace video!

I agree 100% "Everything has it's limits" is not an acceptable answer. "Never heard of that breaking before" should lead them to want the part back to examine it at the very least. In their shoes I would at least offer you a replacement at a drastic price reduction. All in all it's just good business on their part.

... And it is at this point that you may wish to link this thread to your communication with JB so they can weigh in on the discussion.

Regardless of what they should or should not have done, but there is nothing they can send me. There are no parts in stock and he said he had more high demand products that are waiting for manufacturing runs well before these input shafts will be produced again. I even asked him if he wanted pictures to look at the failure and he said "no, I made the drawing for that part, I know exactly what you're talking about."

Whatever. I won't be buying from them again and won't be able to recommend their company either. It's sad too because the products they make are some of the most well thought out driveline components I've seen for domestic adaptation projects. The guy is a skilled engineer, there just isn't any customer service. All of my communication with JB was via phone, so there's nothing to link to.

On the other hand, advanced adapters has always been there for me. I'm not sure the parts quality is as high as JB Conversions, but they have their s*** in stock and have amazing customer service.

I'm over JB conversions. I've got parts on the way now and Moonshine will be back together soon.
