SSOOoo, let's say you have the rear shackle hangers off the frame, for one reason or the other. what would be the recommended meathod of reconnecting them to the frame?

Bolt through the existing rivet holes or weld. Depends on your resources...

Nick

or both

I recommend BOTH. Bolt through the frame to get the location right, then weld solidly.

Many years ago I was in a bad accident partly caused by the spring hanger on an FJ60 ripping off the frame. The axle moved sideways, locked against the body, and the Land Cruiser rolled back to front, endo'd. Pretty crazy, I can still the pavement coming straight at me as the wagon landed upside down.

man i love my wagon

I wouldn't like to try to repair that, epsecially if you want to carry your family on main roads.
I'm hoping the photos make it look worse than what it actually is. Can you get hold of another chassis, or complete wreck? That way you could prep the chassis really well before you bolt everything to it.

ouch man, i thought i had just on my frame. i would definately be searching for a new frame, how does the body look, many rust holes?

gotta love those east coast winters. like the new exhaust. I would look for a donor frame. I've got one here in MT I could sell/get to you in Jan. if you don't find one by then. Paul

That's about as bad as I have seen. I am so glad they do not use salt on the raods here. Is that repairable?

Here in MT the DOT uses a 4-8% salt content in the sand, depending on what section of road its to be used on.. it helps the sand from clumping and aids with melting. my guess is they do the same in CA. at least its not 100% salt. Company I work for just bid a couple of jobs supplying sand.

yeah, it's fixable....and looks worse than it really is. they put an "extra" channel in the frame channel above the rear shackle hanger. and that is what rotted, the REAL frame channel really isn't bad at all. i thought i had a pic of the area after removal of the rotted piece....but i don't.
i don't feel it's worth replacing the whole frame, from the back of the rear pass doors, forward it's spotless.
alittle bit of cutting here, some grinding there and a bit of welding and it'll be ready for another 20 years.

and that is OEM exhaust....$100 bucks from toyota, from the back of the cat, to the back of the truck...one piece. :grinpimp:

Damn.

I'm in NY and don't have any of that.

Solid as a rock.

If it wasn't, then it would have broken a couple of weeks ago when I went wheeling.

Sorry about that bud...

Hey, Bin there and done that...(hit a big rock and busted one off)
Bolting the suspension hangers up works just fine instead of the factory rivets...use grade 8 bolts that are plated to resist corrosion.
