Out West..
I was driving home the other night when I spotted this LandCruiser pickup sitting parked in a gravel parking lot next to a local grocery store. So, naturally, I just had to snap some pics. (I took some shots that night, others I shot the next morning before they left for Cali.. :) )

After quickly driving home and grabbing my Sony, I ran back down there to take a look at my dream rig. I knocked on the camper door and out came a friendly lad from Switzerland who was kind enough to let me take some shots of his rig. He also let me peek under the hood and inside the cab. He was literally giddy when talking about his mode of transportation. He went on, and on. You could tell that he absolutely loves his LandCruiser!

He brought the truck over from Switzerland on a ship, and had it shipped to Canada. From there, his wife and himself (Stephen?) drove across Canada. Once they got to BC, they pointed south and drove across the US border into Washington State. He said that it only took him about an hour to cross the border. He also mentioned that US Customs didn't give him any hassle about the rig he was driving.

They are headed all the way down to Argentina!

I gotta tell ya', I've been on a LC High ever since I laid my eyes on this Cruiser...

(These pics really focus on the truck, not so much the camper.. ;) )

He had three full-sized batteries shoehorned in there. There is one on the passenger side that he used to power up stuff inside the camper. He mentioned that he had solar panels on top of the camper that slowly added juice back to the bats..

I want one of these diesel engines! Heck, a 4-cylinder version would work, too... :crybaby:

The cab pics didn't turn out that well. My AA batteries were going dead and it wouldn't auto focus at all.. :frown:

(The cardboard armrest is a classy touch!)

The camper that he got in Germany..

Other details. The wheels are Alcoas. The front coil springs and shocks are Old Man Emu's. He replaced the stock batteries for new, larger ones in Canada. He said that he added airbags under the rear for "piece of mind". I forgot to take pics of them.

Hope you enjoy the pics. :)

what a killer truck

I'd live in it, too!

I would also use it as a camper when I go and explore our local sand dunes or the Oregon Coastal Range. Ya' gotta love Oregon! ;)

One regret is not asking him to spin the motor up so I could hear it rattle away. Since he was so eager to show me everything, I really wish that I would've at least asked... :crybaby:

they don't "rattle away" they are almost as quiest as a gasser... think gasser with a tick and you are there (not a knock, a tick)

God it's wierd seeing one without a bullbar.

Oh and some turkey has put the steering wheel on the wrong side!

well, if we could all drive from the right side of the truck and the right side of the road, instead of the wrong side right side or right side wrong side, then that would be sweet. Because being on the wrong side of the truck is uncomfortable.

Lovely pick-up ( we call them bakkies here ), but that 160 km/h speedo is really just for looks. The diesel is indestructible, but 160km/hr? nooooooooo

not once they are turbo'd... i have had a turbo'd HZJ75 past 160 k/h... do i recommend it? how small is the brain and how big are your balls?

They use the same speedo on the HDJ71,74,78,79 so I suppose it does have some relevance.

panzies, RHD units on LHD roads are for men, not boys...

Agreed. I think I should explain, I learned Right = Right and Left = Wrong. Take it as you like, but I think it makes a tonne of sense when you apply that to my original post about right side vs. wrong side. :grinpimp: But 160 km/h in a non-turbo'd 4.2L I6 Diesel? Unpossible. I was barely able to get my cousin's old F250 7.3L V8 Diesel (non-turbo 91 model) to 70 MPH (around 110 km/h). Then again it's a whopping huge V8 Diesel trying to lug around a 8k lb. Regular Cab truck. It does make sense for Toyota to use the same speedo through the whole range, it saves a few pennies.

But 160 km/h in a non-turbo'd 4.2L I6 Diesel? Unpossible.

It is possible. 1HZ engined Std 80 series and 105 series (obviously more slippery than a camper equipped '79). There are some roads in the north of Ghana in the semi-desert which have sections with kms long straights where I have regularly seen 160km/hr.

I have yet to find a good, long enough road to v.max my turbo'ed 1HZ troopy, but I suspect 160 is very much possible. Wouldn't want to brake or turn though!!!!
To be honest I suspect that an empty 79 would crack 160 given a long enough straight road
