Spotted in Salt Lake City Utah. Pop top fzj80 40th anniversary. Thoughts? Looks interesting.

That looks like it will be pretty cool.

I assume that the top is fiberglass, and not aluminum like Camptec. Is there an advantage/disadvantage to fiberglass?

I am assuming less weight.

I spoke with them and they said they are releasing information about this pop up tomorrow on social media and then they will update their website soon after. They seemed friendly and would answer questions readily. Let's see where this goes.

saw you post this on UTOR. Will be interesting to learn more, even if I'm more of a "sleep under the starts" type haha

Nice to see a second 80 series pop-top option for the U.S. market. I love how it follows the 80 series' awkward "bubble" design language. After years in a Campteq, I can quickly see many advantages and disadvantages to each design. More options is good news!

Very cool, but quite pricey.

Most everything is now days. I can say that a lot of thought and intention was put into this pop top. From a fan to lighting to how the bed works. Is it some coin absolutely but it’s the only fiberglass option on the market. Campteqs are also nice but pricey as well…but again different from what’s being offered as well.

By the looks of the top of my campteq I would of ripped the fiberglass bubble off years ago.
The biggest con I see is a small bed.
NIce to have another option for expo crowd.

These are very good points. It would certainly seem like the Campteq would be more resistant to damage from tree limbs and such when these vehicles are used as intended.

And I think Camptec is still considerably less expensive.

Can you guys with Campteqs give use some feedback on them? The new Wasatch one is $16k to start.

Sure.

Campteq is simple, functional, and bomber. After nine years (nothing compared to LC Phil) we use it all the time and it's still like new. It makes remote camping a lot easier. It's been one of those purchases that wasn't at all cheap and has proven to be an excellent value.

Likes:
  • Several hundred pound load capacity. The roof is a photography platform, carries large sea kayaks on brutal roads, and is a sunset cocktail patio.
  • Low profile. Zero wind noise, zero impact on mileage. It dampens interior noise and deflects branches.
  • Bomber. Welded aluminum construction and full-width front hinge is indestructible. It's proven secure in violent storms pointed into 60 mph sustained overnight wind.
  • Comfy. I'm 6'3" and my wife and I sleep better in it than in our own bed. We use a 3" Ikea mattress.
  • Versatile. Can be clamp-on or cut roof. I do clamp on for a variety of good reasons.
  • Lightweight. It's aluminum and so lightweight; it's impact on sway is minimal.
None of this is to take away from the Wasatch, which looks like a very well thought out and full featured design. Of course, one could go buck wild with interior build outs on either pop-top design. I prefer to keep things as simple and lightweight as possible.
