you would need to make sure the transfer case has the pto gear. and a way to engage/disengage it

And @Living in the Past (John) probably knows more about PTOs than anyone on the planet--I was lucky, mine was fairly complete (even had the original rope and hook). With that said, even though my unit came off a 69' I had the wrong PTO unit but I met John in AZ and we swapped units and he gave me the correct shift linkage and flap. I then bought a donor tranny hump with an OEM PTO shift hole and used it as a template and had a machinist cut it exactly per OEM. Love the PTOs!

How about a trade for a non-split PTO gearbox? I have one that was pulled from a '78, but I need the split for my '79. Anyway, just thought I'd ask.

what drivetrain is in the 79? stock 79 would still have a 1 piece transfer
