I'm pretty sure I'm the biggest moron on this forum. I put my used oil container in the cargo area, and oil leaked all over.

My plan is to remove the carpet and attempt to clean it. If I can't get it clean, then I'll order new carpet. Either way, the carpet needs to come out.

So, any tips on removing the carpet? What panels should I remove first, etc. I have interior removal tools, so that's a start.

Thanks so much for your help!

It looks like it is contained to the back, so at least there's only one section of carpet to contend with.

You will need to take out the 3rd row seats, fold up the second row, and take off the paneling on each side.

These threads will probably help you understand what needs to be removed:

I'd start with a hoover carpet cleaner if you have one. Go over it a dozen times to vacuum up as much oil as you can and put it in a container for future disposal.

If it's financially possible and even available, my vote is to just replace the carpet bud. That's going to be a LOT of sunk time in trying (likely unsuccessfully) to clean that stuff out. There's a couple bolts you will need to remove to get the plastic paneling off iirc too (seat belt anchors, the cargo net plastic knob piece, etc), but they will be evident when the giant panel doesn't move due to one stubborn attachment still working. I had to remove one whole side to run my dashcam wire, and wish I took pics, etc. Good luck with it, I can relate to having stuff like this happen.

If you get a piece of carpet on order, use the time between receiving and ordering to go ahead and get after removal/cleaning/etc. You're going to want some time between the removal and the new stuff going in. There's going to be plenty of oil in all sorts of places (in trim/gaskets/etc). You're going to want to get that out before getting new carpet in to have it soak into the new stuff.

EDIT: You're going to likely see a ton of it under your plastic tailgate trim piece and the gasket too. Take it slow and be deliberate working from top down.

Hey, just look at it as rust prevention for the rear! You just put down a layer of protection!

I agree with just replace it, if you can afford it.

BTDT, when I was poor many years ago, and the smell always came back when the car was parked outside on a sunny day.

Looks like $500 USD + shipping is about the best price around for 5857060A90B0 (best to verify the correct color code with your dealer).

Your choice, but chicks dig dudes with a strong Eau de Pennzoil essence wafting about...

Ive made bigger mistakes (and in less time). But I'm old. Hmmm,....Dawn ? (sorry and good luck!)

My worst fear taking oil to the recycler.

I worked at a car detailing shop in high school. A lady brought in a car where someone dumped a bucket of oil down the rear convertible plastic window. I'll never forget that.

My suggestion would to get a WeatherTech liner or use a blanket or scrap piece of carpet and wait until there is another parts sale. The OP just missed the most recent one by three days. That would at least save themselves 25% or $125 plus the shipping. Might take a bit of the sting out of the mess.

Thanks for your input, all! I cleaned it and will order new carpet and pad. There's NO WAY I could remove all that oil from the carpet. View attachment 3863247
I agree with @TheIcemanCometh . Get a weather mat and just hold out for the next parts sale. It'll save you some serious loot.

Great start so far though! Did you peel back that black weather strip to see what (if any) of it got inside the gasket? I don't think it'd break the rubber down, but the smell would be effervescent on a nice hot day.

Nice try, but not even close. ;)
not nice to scold me like that, publicly 😢😢

@bgladd glad you got new carpets. How hard is install?

I drain all used oil on these side gutters on our street. No way I am putting it in my cars. I care about my car too much

Putting it in drain, I think eventually goes into pacific ocean. No biggie, as our water is cold, I never go, and often our beaches are closed for sanitation leaks etc anyways

Atlantic has nice warm water where I go in summers
