Is there a source for new speedo gears so it will read somewhat more correctly? I can use GPS for it, but the wife is not a fan of that.

I've been thinking about this.

Although my speedo is currently more or less accurate (I compared it to GPS, and it is acceptable, although the accuracy varies throughout its range), I am thinking of leaving it alone when I do the turbo, then regearing, then taller tires - much as you have done.

As far as I can tell my diffs are 4.56:1 and the tires 28". I can use lower revs on the highway. I don't intend to do rock crawling or mud bogging - just tame overlanding.

I am thinking of just using a GPS speedo.

I know you're not keen on a GPS but I'd suggest you suss out a speedbox setup.

It converts the gps signal to drive the mechanical speedo. That might give you enough WAF to make it with with your other half.

.. also, as long as you're not doing regular tunnel travel, then it's a feasible option. I've got one in the shed - just need to install it.

Same here. With the added power the regear allows me to actually drive on the highway. With the stock 4.55's it would be SCREAMING at 80mph.

Yeah. My biggest issue is the price. I would love to just change a gear, but this would definitely be the next best option. D0you happen to know what the size cable is for a Hilux?

Mine does indeed scream at 80+ MPH. Top speed seems to be around 86-87 MPH with my canopy and rack, maybe a little more now that I removed the Pelican box that was bolted to the front of the rack. Certainly not good for fuel efficiency, and probably not good for engine life.

Not that I would generally cruise at 80+ MPH, but I would very much like lower RPMs at 60-75 MPH. For off-road, if needed, I figure that I can always drop into 4-Lo if necessary, and if I find I need/want to crawl at even lower speeds, I can mod the XFer case to get a 4-Lo of~4.7:1 or a double case (in which I would probably go "whole hog" and convert to an R150/151 setup - maybe even a 6 speed conversion (I find the gaps in the 5 speeds annoying - but maybe once I add a turbo they would feel better).

In terms of "size", what are you after?

The cable that came with the package that I bought was fabricated by the supplier (refer pic). The cable itself is 600 mm long. You can see from the pic that the Speedbox connector (refer Speedhut / Speedbox web page for tech specs) is on the right and the connector to the installed instrument cluster speedo is on the left (yellow housing).

Does that cover your question?
