I have ran into a problem trying to put speakers into my 1993. The front door speakers were blown so I bought some new ones to put in. The problem is that it is a 6 inch speaker mount and they do not sell them any more. I bought a 6 1/2 inch to put in and I am trying to figure out the best way to do it. The magnet on the speaker also does not go in all the way because of the window frame. It is about 1/2 an inch away from fitting in. I know they sell spacers, but the spacer I got does not fit in either. Any suggestions.

I did an aftermarket install on a 98 4runner one time that ad the same problem u described. the owner didnt want to get smaller speakers (i.e. the right ones) so i ended up getting a small sheet of fiber board i think it was 1/2 inch and cut out spacers with a jig saw and drilled to match holes. thats prob your best bet.

Twiggy, Do a search on speaker installs, and you'll find a lot of great info from detailed past posts. Search my posts as I wrote in length about my install, doing the same thing you are needing to do.

I wanted some kick in the front so I put in these 6 3/4" mids and made the pods out of fiberglass finished in linex....it was a real experience working with the stuff and they turned out nicely.

I changed out the front door speakers just a few weeks ago. I found the shortest mounting depth speakers that still sounded reasonably good (Polk Audio 6 1/2's) with 2 inch mounting depth. Then I cut a couple of spacers from 1/4" and 1/8" hardboard or masonite that fit the speaker and still fit into the impression in the door sheetmetal where the old speaker goes. With the 3/8ths spacer in place, all the room is taken up between the old speaker mounting area and the inside door panel. Once the spacers are in and attached to the door - I just used a single countersunk screw into the old speaker mount plastic insert - snap the door panel back on. Then just drill and mount the speakers on the outside of the door panel. I only did not have to cut any of the door panel, as the speaker fit into the existing hole. With the 2 inch mounting depth, I had about 1/8th of an inch clearance between the window track and the back of the speaker magnet. A bit tight, but seems to work.

Sorry, no pictures...
