I have the stock front speakers in the stock location in the dash (no rear speakers) and they still work however the sound is less than impressive. I suppose I could replace the speakers with some aftermarket ones which might improve the sound quality a little but the speakers are pretty small to begin with.

If anyone runs a different set-up than stock, what did you do?

I've installed two stereo systems in BJ74s...one in mine and another in a friend's. We both went with 6x9s in the rear and 6.5"s in the front door panels. You do have to cut, though...and some people aren't into that. The factory 4" speakers are just about useless for sound. I'm thinking of using those locations for mounting speakers for the CB.

This is what my front speaker looks like:

HTH.

I've done exactly that, Stone; it works well as a location for CB speakers. I'd advise getting better speakers for that location as well, though.

Stone

Did you have to cut into the metal of the door itself or just removeable panel? What did you use for mounting points in the door to affix the speaker to and where did you run the wires?

Sorry for all the questions, I really like your idea and just want to know as many details about it before I atempt anything. I wonder if a 2-way speaker would work well, with the tweeters mounted in the stock location and the woofer mounted in the door?

Canuck: I had to cut a tiny bit of metal behind that panel on the doors. There is a square depression/opening behind the panel where I've placed my speakers, and you need to widen it a tiny bit for the speaker basket to fit. Two of my screws are securely attached to metal, the other two are secured using the clips that were supplied with the speakers. I also made a baffle behind the speakers on top of the magnet to prevent water from dripping into the voice coil and causing corrosion. If you look closely at the pic, you will see that you also have to cut a small section of the map pocket closest to the speaker to make it fit.

As for the component speaker idea...high-frequency sound is very directional, as opposed to low frequency which is more diffuse. Consequently, I would think that you would want your tweeters to be firing towards you in order to fully enjoy the sound. If I had components I would still mount the tweeters higher up on the door panels. My 2-way coaxial speakers sound fairly decent for a relatively inexpensive sound system.

MikeyT: Thanks for the tip on better speakers...I'll definitely do that for the CB.

Cheers.

I didn't want to cut the front doors and I run MBQuart so i visited a few shops and they all told me something different due to what they WANTED to sell so I asked MB Quart directly. They recommended 4" in the front stock location(i believe they will fit as stock is 3.5) RCE 210(tweeters). Then I could run a 4" (RWE100) in the rear or 6.5" (RCE164 or 160) for mid bass. Then I have 10 tube in the rear for sub Bass. Good sound ;)

Otherwise your best bet is put them in the front door like stone, or build kick panels(not a whole lot of room for that) and run a coax speaker.
