Need advice- I own a 2001 LX and previous owner had replaced 4 tires with Wildpeak LT 285/70r18 on Method NV305 wheels but left 275/70r16 as spare.

I like current wheels and tires but need a useable spare for off road that will fit under truck. From reading several threads, I believe the tire diameters must match to within a few percent .

AFAIK my options are 1) buy new NV305 and 275/70r18 Wildpeak $$$ or 2)get a larger tire for 16 “ rim (new or used) such as a 305/70r16 $$ that would match diameter closely.

Am I missing something or are there other downsides to larger tire on 16 rim as a spare other than rims not matching?

Thanks, sometimes the simplest solution plumb evades me. 😣

I doubt at 285/70/18 will fit under the truck. Thats almost a 34 inch tire. people have issues fitting a 33 under there.

I currently have 275/70r18 on truck and will look for same size as spare. Thanks

Your first post had a typo. If 33” diameter, you could also go 255/85R16 on the spare and gain some clearance.

If you are able, having five tires to rotate gives you a lot of advantages. Research shows it actually increases the miles you get out of a set by more than 20%. In addition, if you end up ruining a tire, it will allow you to buy just one tire to replace it (making the new tire your permanent spare) instead of buying 2 for a matched set.

I carry a 275/70R18 spare (Toyo AT) on a steel Tundra wheel (18x8") and it fits under the 100 just fine.

Good catch on typo. 255/85r16 is very close in size. I’ll check local availability.

Thanks for confirming 275/70/18 would fit. I thought it would but. . .
