Working on the 1971 FJ40 and needed to remove the spare tire and spare tire holder. But, the 53 year old bolts are breaking off, even if you try penetrating oil and or heat. Does anyone know what size bolts I need to get in order to replace these? Hopefully I can get them out with an easy out, and if not I may have to drill and tap and put larger ones in.

If I'm not mistaken, M8 bolts attach the hinges to the captive nuts on the body. Going forward, you would be wise to have a container or two of antisieze on your workbench. Also, to the extent that you have not already done so, you might want to get your hands on the Nut & Bolt spread sheet. I believe that Coolerman had it posted. Also, Overland Metric sells very nice stainless hardware and has useful fastener size information on their website.

Thank you so much! I appreciate it. I hadn't thought about antisieze in years. I do need to get some. And I need to buy a supply of stainless bolts & nuts as I am sure there will be many more to break or have to be cut or grind off.
