If I were going to carry a spare axle on a wheeling trip, what parts would I need to have on-hand, and are there any special tools I would need?

I'd like to put together an "oh sh*t" package that will get me to the nearest garage in case of a mechanical screw-up while I'm out and about.

Thanks in advance.

Well at least research and tell us which axle you want to take or we'll give short and sharp answers.

Don't bite the hands that feed.

If you want a spare front CV that information is reposted all over this place.

The rear is a bigger issue and you may just want to strap a complete assembly to the roof.

I can't imagine somebody carrying around a spare rear, but I'm sure crazier things have been done.

You can also carry around spare parts from the CV and change just the necessary part until you can get to a shop. But carrying a full CV isn't a big deal either.

I usually pull an 8' x 20' trailer with a complete 100 just incase I need anything. If I do, it's right there. Comes in real handy sometimes. Kills gas mileage but great insurance.

And that's when I'm in a good mood

Maybe when your in a better mood you can accept my request into the guild :)

Got your email, will touch base tomorrow.

As for the OP's question. I carry the necessary tools to remove the upper and lower control arms ball joint. The lower BJ nut is 24mm, I can't remember what the UCA BJ nut is. Carrying a spare CV is a good idea, carrying a extra front diff is even smarter.

I left the question open intentionally. I don't know what I don't know. I wasn't sure if it was logistically feasible to bring parts/tools for a rear axle repair. FlammableFishie and AimCOtaco's responses basically answered that.

jemsec's response actually made me laugh.

Thanks 2000UJZ. I wouldn't have thought to bring a front diff.

If you break a front cv or diff, you don't need any spares to get home. There are plenty of threads that tell you what you need to do. The rear axle is not serviceable in the field.

Like mentioned, there are a few threads on tools and spares to carry.
