hey all,

my 84 auz diesel troopy told me the other day, " hey man get me a 5 speed".

So as karma has it my good friend is visiting melbourne next week. what's the odds of a 40 series top loader h55 being found in or near melbourne?

also i could use a factory power steering update. as i know hj47's came stock with power steering.

can anybody guide me? or better yet help me source a h55, with the correct top loader to easily fit into my hj47? and the power steering???

whooo hooooo, as usual help comments appreciated.

Hey Chuck,

I'm from Perth, Western Australia. When I did my H55 conversion I had a look for a 40 series top loader, with no success. They are around here in Oz, but I think they only came in the late model LXs and BJ42s - which are relatively rare, and tend to be the type of model which people go out of their way to keep on the road - therefore, not many are parted out.
That said, I have heard of a few people getting their hands on one.

When I did my H55 conversion, I kept the 70 series toploader it came with and modified the tranny hump cover plate, as you can see in my thread (post no. 76):

Tell your friend to drink coffee. Melbourne coffee is exceptional. So is their nightlife. And food. And art. And culture, etc...

Anyhow, you may want to keep your eyes peeled on these sites:

Car Parts & Auto Accessories For Sale | Melbourne Region | Gumtree Classifieds

Car Parts - Find New & Used Car Parts for Sale – Trading Post

Or you could pop this guy a question to see what model that 5 speed came from:

Good luck my friend!

If I say something stupid here...forgive me, but I thought these were available in the U.S. from Toyota still?

I called Cruiserdan a few months ago and I thought you could still buy a brand new one? Only reason I bring this up because I was toying with the idea of converting to a 5 spd and this seemed like a fairly economical way to go.

They are still available new.

I think he's hoping to find one used while his friend is in Australia, and more importantly, to find a 40 series top cover for the H55f. The only ones available from Toyota are the 60/70 series top covers, which have the shift lever 3-4" farther back than the 40 series covers.

I'd probably just modify the transmission tunnel/cover to match the H55f, but that's just me....

Dan

I saw Washington in his sig so I didn't look much further than that.

When Josh (HJ47) was looking for me when i bought my troopy I think the 40 series ones were very difficult to find. I think the 60/70 series were available used, but the price for a used one wasn't that far off from a new one.

I guess my thinking was just buy a new one from Cruiserdan since they weren't that expensive and move the shifter hole back 3" on the tunnel. And you get the satisfaction of knowing your starting from zero miles with a new OEM tranny, and it didn't cost that much more than a used one.

good ideas

your both right. just hoping for the holy grail i guess. love to find a 40 top. so i'll cross my fingers.

thanks guys.

The top is the hard part. The transmission is easy, otherwise. ;) And, as Matt noted: a new one isn't much more, and then you'd have a new one... Shipping is a world of difference between a top cover and a whole transmission too.

I've contemplated buying and 83-84 BJ-42 that was rusted to crap almost entirely for the top cover. Then I realized it was just easier to modify the transmission hump, if it comes to that.

Dan

hey Chuck, how goes it? Like Dan hinted, the best way to proceed with the H55 would be to source a new one along with a spare tranny hump top cover for modification. then you could continue your search for "rocking horse s***" on the side while still enjoying the 5 speed.

if you purchase a used 5 speed, you stand a good chance it will need to be gone through. By the time you purchase it, import it, parts and possibly labor(?), you've exceeded your cost for a brand new one.:meh:

I'll call you when I get word on your other junk:beer:

I won't mind finding a 4X series shifter myself and have a few feelers out. You have to remember if you buy a H55F out of a BJ42LX that that transmission won't mate up to a F or H engine. The input shaft is different and because it has a gear on it it's not just as simple as the tailshaft to replace. For me I don't want to use a 60/70 series shifter because I would have to cut a hole in the factory floor mat where it says Toyota.

any pics around of a 40 series top loader?

although sounds like a hard find.

thanks all for the comments. i'm starting to like my 4speed gear box again.

might as well start looking for one of these too:D
I want want of those ......... pipe dream

When you guys say a new one is not that much more expensive than a second hand one, by what sort of margin are we talking here? How much is a new H55 in the US? I bought my second hand H55 for $600 Aus.

probably under $2000 still

was your $600 dollar h55 in "Like New" shape? There might be deals to be had but, if 1st gear syncro needs replacing expect $500 plus, rebuild kit is probably $250, output shaft is $$$, it will add up to near $2000 quickly and might not be as good as new still:meh:

No, definitely not "as new". But it is in pretty good shape. All synchros are fine. I took a chance and just stuck it in without a rebuild. That was about a year and a half ago, and I've not had any issues with it.

But to rebuild, and to ship it, I suppose you would be getting very near to $2000.

A 40 series top cover and a split case PTO???? I think I officially hate you right now.

/back to the thread...

Dan

here you go

Are you even using it. You wouldn't want to trade would you?

might as well start looking for one of these too:D

Got this one covered. Wasn't as hard to find as the PTO off the very earlier three speed transmission, transfer case. Have four different Toyota PTO types. Still looking for a couple of more different ones.

I bet. I'll probably never see one of those become available, would be the icing for the '59

That would not work on a 59 FJ25 four speed transmission with the case iron single speed transfer case. The PTO mounted to the side of ther transmission. I traded one of those away. The vehicle that got it is now in Australia. Those were easier to find. The early FJ40 have a different three speed transmission and transfer case. Only used during 61/62 and part of 63. Most have been converted over to the mid 63 thru early 74 three speed transmission and transfer. Your 62 had a PTO added from the later three speed and it wasn't a good fit. It was tearing up both the transfer and PTO. I know a PO scraped the running gear out of that 62.
