the sound system my 1996 land cruiser just lost its balls. the speakers still work, but everything else just...left. its got no bass. i was wondering if there are any replacement systems out there that would work in my TLC, or any woofers that would work (ones that dont take up the whole back end)

There really isnt any good replacement option for a sub. First, the electrical system sucks. The alternator only puts out 80-90 amps. Any powerful amp will put too much stress on the already weak system. Second, there is not much room in the side panels in the rear for an aftermarket sub. The dimensions are on here somewhere, but basically it is more practical to build a box for the back. If you want some advice on some subs that can operate well with low current draw, check Image Dynamics IDQ series. A ten or twelve will do well with 300-500 watts ported, and be really loud. It will run you about 120 bucks for the sub. Then find yourself an amp like a hifonics, alphasonik, jbl, ect. Not the nicest or cleanest amps, but produce their rated power and are relatively inexpensive. Then build yourself a box.

I guess it depends if you like to wear your hat sideways or not. My system sound great with Eclipse head and cd, MB Quart seperates, Kicker amp and sub in stock location although with a different mount built in.

I have a system with over 800 watts peak total output in my mini with the stock alternator. Ok well I've deep cycled the battery a few times and fried the alternator but I don't usually jam out with the truck not running. The alternator keeps up like a champ, and only with my headlights & 4 100watt lights does it seem to pull down with the system turned up.
IMO for the 80 do like I did, get an Infinity BassLink $250-$300. The stock speakers covers mids and highs pretty well and the basslink adds just enough bass not to really bother anyone outside the car but keep a simile on your face. The basslink pulls 200 watts RMS and probably about 300 watts peak.
Just as a side note, replacing the head unit will yeild the biggest improvment. I however plan to hook an amp to the factory head unit to drive the mids and tweeters. I'm going to put in the older green Infinity Kappa componments, 6 1/2" in the front doors, 5 1/4" in the rear doors, tweeters in the dash and back headliner. I'm sure the older kappas will fit in the doors with some minor work so I can keep the stock speaker grills and look. Latter when I'm ready I can get a new head unit and the infrastructure will be in place for a great system.

BROKEROB1 that's really clean. Did the speaker in the tailgate require any cutting of the service panel? I assume some holes had to be drilled and tapped for mounts?

I'm interested in those taligate locations, too. I bought Punch 10 yesterday for cheap, but realized how much spacing it will require, and am thinking of going with an 8" instead, trying to use stock location (or close)....

I don't know if I would recommend the speaker in the tailgate. It was the PO's and I will live with it. There is a very small window for the cutout and I really don't think that anything larger than an 8" would fit. IIRC there are cross-members inside of the tailgate that control the latch that pretty much make any other location on the tailgate prohibitive. As you can see, the amp fits PERFECTLY in that stock location. With the sub in the tailgate, the sound quality was moderate at best, as it is impossible to control/limit the amount of interior volume. In fact, I racked my brain for weeks, trying to seal off part of the interior space to limit volume (boomy, uneven, poor depth, etc). Those pesky cross members that need to be free to move to work the latch deterred my efforts. I even sealed the entire interior of the TG with silicone and also Dynamatted/pollyfilled, as well. In the end, I was still dissatisfied with sound performance, in comparison to the small, sealed box. I came to a happy compromise.
In my prevoius life, I enjoyed building home theater and car audio speakers, crossovers, etc. I had case of 8" woofers left over and I swapped one into the existing hole and wired that end with quick connectors to the space you see in the pic. When my LC requires family duties, I will remove the box and use the quick connectors and hook into the set of quick connectors for the sub in the TG. Otherwise I am really pleased with the setup using this small box.
You guys are probably familiar with the JL lineup and they are one of the most versatile subs to work with. This 8" has specs that many 10" and some 12" would desire. They also have great technical support via the web with box designs, etc.
