I'm currently in middle of nowhere MT. After getting gas my starter seemed to spin faster than usual and a bit longer. I'm just shy of 90k miles.

Is this a similar to what others noticed before theirs died? If so I may avoid any more starts until I can get back to civilization. Thanks.

mine did nothing. No sound. The warning was when you pressed start it wouldn't start on the first press.

Significantly thinner air in the mountains maybe?

I'm at the base of the Selkirk/Cabinet Mountains. About the lowest elevation in Montana. Approximately 2300'.

We decided to just stay here and not wander around just in case the starter is going. It sounded like the starter was spinning about 2-3 times the normal speed and for maybe a couple seconds lomger than normal.

We are playing it safe and staying in one spot and hope it starts tomorrow and we'll head home.

I appreciate people's input. I thought I recalled others hearing a sound before it gave up but could not recall the symptoms people saw. My internet is slow and spotty but can make calls if we need a tow.

Mine failed this year at 176k. About 3 days prior it was taking a hit longer to and a bit higher pitched until it just gave out. Not a fun job, had to tow 15 miles home and took most of a Saturday to replace. Stupid heat shields

Mine had about 5 higher pitched noise starts before it failed.

Getting ready to head out. Cruiser started fine and sounded normal. Will replace starter when I get home.

Mine gave me 2 or 3 starts that sounded a little different, then it was gone.
