71 FJ40. Stock under the hood/drive train.
Drives for a few miles but after that it feels like it starts to slip out of gear. It's one I am looking at buying so I don't have a ton of info about the issue but I don't imagen a clutch being too hard to replace. Just want to pretty much make sure that's the issue before I drive 10+ hours to go look at this thing.

Howdy! If the engine speeds up, but the wheels don't, the the clutch is slipping, needs replaced. If the transmission is sliding out of gear as it drives, then the transmission needs rebuild/replaced. Have to pull the transmission/transfer case for either one. John

First of all, where are you? Or, more importantly, where is it? Could someone else go look at it for you? 10 hours away?

What do you mean by "feels like it starts to slip out of gear"? It's a manual transmission. If it's in gear, it's in gear. If it pops out, it's not in gear any longer.

If the tranny pops out of gear, it's a tranny problem.

If the tranny stays in gear, but there is a disconnect between the engine speed and the wheel speed, then the clutch is slipping.

Yea, guess I didn't think that all the way through. I'm in Memphis, its in Gainsville FL. I don't know anyone in that area to look at it for me either. Hrmm, guess I need to call him again.

Agreed, if its the clutch, you won't be able to put it in gear, but once its there, its there. Let me give the guy a call and talk about the issue a bit more. Tranny being bad might make it not worth the trouble. Thanks for answering my dumb questions :)
