Greetings all..
SO I have a 1980 FJ40 that I'm attempting to install an SOR 2 piece header.
I've run into some issues and would like some feedback from the community.
My rig has a shackle reversal which has presented the first major problem.
The SOR header actually hits the bolt for the upper shackle pin. (with the shackle reversal) In the correct configuration, the grease fitting should be on the outside, and the bolt on the inside. I concluded that IF I pulled the pin, and put the grease fitting on the inside, it would allow enough clearance for the header. The only MAJOR issue with this configuration is once the header is installed, there is NO way to pull the pin for replacement which would be a major issue if it broke on the trail. I'm wondering, has no one ever contacted SOR and told them their header doesn't work with the shackle reversal???
The second issue is with the finish quality of the headers themselves. I had a hell of a time trying to get the intake manifold and headers to mesh together, and line up correctly. I have installed one of the Man-A-Fre 6-1 headers in my old FJ60, and had no issues with fitment, what so ever. I know they are designed to fit snug, but I think the only way to make them fit correctly is to pull out the grinder and remove some metal.
The last issue is with the gasket. The one SOR provides with the header is, to say the least, poorly manufactured. The holes actually DO NOT line up! This is frustrating to say the least. I think I will order the stock Toyota gasket tomorrow.
Anyhow, my questions are basically;
-should I keep the header and 'make it work'
-should I call SOR and tell them the header's finish quality sucks and return it?
-should I go with another brand header (like the MAF)
Any input would be greatly appreciate. And please let me know if anyone else has run into this/these problems...
Cheers
