I don't even have a 200 yet and I already hate the Nav system.

I got up at 4:00am last Saturday and drove 4 hours to an out of state dealer to test drive and buy a 2010 cruiser. When I was about 10 minutes from arriving, I got an email that the truck wouldn't be ready for delivery that day due to a Nav problem; parts are ordered and on the way. No big deal, I think. I drove it as is and made a deal.

Parts arrived and installed on Thursday - but the new nav dvd player doesnt want to play nice with the display. Couple days later they're still futzing with it. They're calling around to other dealers to get some help, and have no estimate on completion time. The service history shows that the display unit was replaced a few years ago. The good news is the sales guy says they'll make it right before delivering to me, which I take to mean that I could be getting a completely new nav system by the end of this.

The potential downside is there's really no warranty. Say they get it working fine and deliver it, but the display craps out again a week later - I could be on the hook for a massive repair bill.

I've been scouring the forums for all the display and nav info I can find. There's a lot of discussions about hating the nav, etc. but I really don't see a lot of complete hardware failure issues. Mostly just complaining that we're stuck with a too-integrated system while the rest of the world has modular systems that can be easily upgraded.

How worried should I be about this buy? I love everything else about this cruiser. It drives great, was well maintained, and is the exact color combo I want.

Personally, I'd ask for a refund on my deposit at this point, unless they are willing to add some sort of extended warranty that specifically covers the electronics to the deal.

Agree with KLF--if you wish to continue with this deal, you MUST get that dealer to include an extended warranty on that new NAV.

Is it just the nav or the entire touch screen system?

I've used my nav a total of ZERO times. The only thing I use is the compass function.

For nav I use my phone. I just started mounting it to the AC Vent but before had the stand/ phone case and would just set it horizontally next the the USB port in front of center console.

Any indication that there is a recurring problem with the Nav unit, display, DVD player, etc. would be a deal breaker for me. Not that there aren't better standalone GPS options out there - there most certainly are - but the fact that so much of the truck's features run through those electronics mandates a system that functions reliably.

I'd ask for my deposit back and walk away. There are better deals out there.

Honestly, I don't care about the navigation itself as I'll never use it. I have multiple other sources for navigation. I'm just worried about collateral impacts to the other integrated systems. If it still functioned for radio and climate controls, I'd be perfectly happy.

Just spoke to the dealer and they got it all worked out (whew!). Had to call in a specialist to reprogram some stuff, but he says everything works flawlessly now AND they will warranty it for 12 months. Fingers crossed! If it fails again in that time, I'll get it fixed then punt it.

Congrats on the truck! Be sure to post pics. :)

My solution that makes me happy:
-Turn off Nav and screen...use your phone or iPad...and you'll NEVER miss the out-dated Nav. :)

If going to off-network areas, just download map sections for offline use. Google allows this and it's great. I am SO much happier having turned the screen off. When I make other adjustments, it pops on as needed...but why use a blocky nav unit with Google (and so many others) are LIVE...and FAR superior anyway...

The only thing I use on the nav is the breadcrumb feature.

I use Google maps or Waze to get me there.

If the destination was someone's house back deep in a neighborhood, I just follow the breadcrumbs on the nav to get me back out to a main road.

The app "HERE" with all of the US maps downloaded (yes you can download the entire continent and other countries) and Backcountry Navigator are all you need. BCN you'll need to download map sections manually but HERE has tons of side/access/fire/lumber roads.

Like most here I don't use he nav in my 2011 either, although I did just get the most recent update "just in case." I use Waze 99.9% of the time on my iPhone as its far superior to the crap Toyota nav.

I try to remind myself that when my 2008 was built...the iPhone was only one year old...and there was NO SUCH THING as an iPad.

My how things have changed!

I have wandered for weeks and months with little cell coverage. Even on our property cell coverage is spotty. My GPS always worked well enough. I understand the allure of Google maps on a speedy connection. I also understand why I have Rotopax on the roof. Toyota is a bit dated with its implementation I know. It does work dependably nonetheless. I find it to be in character for a Land Cruiser.

The onboard map is a nice backup, but Google maps work without any connection at all if you just save the area you're heading into.

You are correct of course. I am the shoemaker without shoes computer scientist. Most of my best adventures happened while I was lost so it is not all bad. My points were merely perspective driven.

'16 nav works just fine and I came off hi-tech BMW Nav for 3 years. I find it actually easier than using Google Maps while I'm driving.
