looks like i need to swap my rear third member.:crybaby:

pinion bearings have gone south.
had a bad road noise that sounded like cupped tires (tires are not cupped)

drained the diff and it looked like a McDonalds iced coffee
i just changed all my fluids after the roll last summer.
haven't been wheeling since, or in deep water

well, i have 4.88s in it now but will have to put a 4.11 diff in it untill i can swap the gears and do it all over again........

just another day in paradise :bang: oh well.

Nice to see a post from you!

I'm not a trained mechanic...but since I have two high milage cruisers I have some experience with worn thirds...and in my experience the pinion bearings go first (before the carrier bearings) and they howl (well, first they whine, then they whine incessantly, then they howl).

I have no clue what a cupped tire sounds like. Does it howl?

I don't understand what would go wrong in a few miles that would cause a pinion bearing to go south.

I freely admit that I don't know more than I do know...but I am curious as to why your pinion bearing would fail in the conditions you describe? Seems odd...

The oil in the diff was water contaminated. Water is a lubricant, but not nearly up to the task of protecting the heavily loaded diff bearings.

2badfjs,

It will probably be a good idea to clean out the axle tubes while the chunk is out.
