Wise and experienced men have been telling me for a year now not to "polish a turd" but I really like mine!

He got his name because of a few of his traits. 'Dirty' because when Dad brought him home his engine had like an inch of gunk coating it, we cleaned him off, and when I next came in for a tune-up, he was just as dirty again. 'Old' because he had 297,000 miles on him. And he's a man because he can't do what I ask him to but he'll sure act like he can until he figures out how.

In fact, I don't think he's a turd at all. He's got some miles on him, yes, 309,00 to be precise, and some serious rust, yes, I can reach into the back to get the lug nut wrench while still sitting in front of the tire, but there are up sides too!

1. He's my first Land Cruiser
1.5 My dad found and got him for me after my car died
2. He always eventually starts
3. His 4X4 works
4. His A/C and heater work
5. He's ALL original (even came with some sweet Grateful Dead & Dylan tapes)
6. The upholstery is in good shape
7. All the dash lights and stuff work
8. I never have to change the oil because he disposes of it on his own

While I don't have the means to do cosmetic fixes, I think he deserves to have his current state preserved.

I was going to start with the engine...but today he pointed out that he needs some new kicks by putting a huge hole in his rear driver side tire. Can't blame him, they're like eleven years old.

It was pretty exciting popping the original Toyota bottle jack and accompanying leverage bars out from under the seat for the first time. I wasn't really sure where to put the jack, so I just stuck it under the axle on the interior side of this oddly placed rectangular thing. Is that where it's supposed to go? And then I got to stand on the Toyota lug nut wrench thing, it just has the fitting for the nut, a short maybe eight bar, and a round hole for another bar of about the same length to fit through for leverage, and jump on it until they popped loose.

They're 31 x 10.5 OR15LT's. So I want to go a little bit bigger, but I honestly don't do a lot of off roading. I do need good snow and ice traction though since I live in Montana. And sometimes I like to drive in deep snow simply because I can. But I am a poor college kid. Anyone have any advice as to brand, specific tire, and size?

how about some pics?

oh yeh welcome :flipoff2:

where in the bigsky are you located?

there is a Montana section in the clubhouse.

Good name for your rig.

Make yourself a list of everything that's wrong with it, prioritize it in order of severity/urgency, and then attack that list methodically with an eye toward best bang for your buck (or time). Unless it really is an old turd, you'll find that it gets easier and better behaved as you work through the list. I'll leave it for the cruiser gurus to suggest exactly what should be your priorities with a high miles rig, but I'd suggest fluids, belts, hoses, and brakes as a general first step. You should also check your vacuum lines, timing, and valve lash...and try to find the source of that leak.

x2 on pics, and welcome :flipoff2:

Thanks for the welcome guys!

Here are a few pictures for now. I'll hop on here again after all the fourth of July festivities are over with.

Have a safe weekend!

And I have more pictures but I can't figure out how the whole put the image in the post thing works. =D

Congrats. Best color rig, IMHO.

I favor the BFG AT's myself. Saving up my pennies to go 33'' on Mudbay'd Alum rims. Currently rocking 30''s on stocker rims: felt bad about abusing a local shop's 'free rotations' after a couple cycles between 2 rigs.

After you get the 'running better's in hand, my vote is for aftermarket fj62 style mirrors, so you can actually see when you are backing.

Oh, and until you get new tires, hit all lugnuts and the spare tire lowering mechanism w/some lube: makes the process much easier.

Hey 3_Puppies

I’m over in Missoula, I checked in on the Montana section in the clubhouse, said hi and poked through all the threads. Have you guys gotten together so far this spring or fall? Or planned another meeting?

Lugal,

I just don’t know where to start! Even with the list. I have tires and some vague things that might be problems. Thanks for the advice!

RAMZ,

Thanks! Lol, I totally tried to resist the call but I’ve finally accepted that it’s hopeless.

SirenMoses,

Why did you have to keep getting rotations? Thanks for the heads up on the lube, I should have picked up a can after having to jump on the wrench when trying to change the tire earlier. Do the BFG AT’s last a while?

Alaska60,

Thanks!! He’s a stud!

So. After a few days I’ve come up with a possible fit for the Old Man.

BFG All Terrain T/A KO
31x10.50R15/C 109S

Cost about $173.99 per tire at Costco.

The BFG site says that the wear life is a 9, fuel efficiency a 6, off road a 9, braking an 8, and comfort a 6 all out of 10.

Anyone know how they do in the snow and ice? I have a bad penchant for thinking the Old Man can do anything. And I want him to look like the bad ass he is.

On another note,

I think I have identified the first order of business. The oil leak.

I like not having to change the oil, but I can’t risk running him dry anymore. So, hopefully the day after tomorrow I’ll have time to clean off the undercarriage and pinpoint the origin of the leak. More on that once it happens.

Anything about fixing oil leaks I should know before I run out and start dismantling my car?

If it were me I would probably do a very cheap lift (add a leaves from man-a-fre around 100$) and run some 33/9.50/15, 33/10.50/15, or 33/12.50/ 15. Bfg A/ts are going to be your best bang for the buck. They will fit pretty easily and its a great size for the 60. The 2 skinnier sizes are a perfect fit for the stock rim. Some people say the wider size is to big for the 60 stock rim which it technically is a little wide but a lot of people run them just fine. If you want some more cheap lift you can put on longer shackles for under $200 that should give you another 1"-1 1/2".
When I first bought my 60 I did the aal shackles and a 2" body lift which gave me about 4 inches total and ran 33s. It worked well and cost about $400. Honestly I probably had as much fun with that setup as I do now that it is Spring over axle with a v8 35s and 5500$ less in my bank account.

As far as your oil leak if its really really bad search for the "oil galley plug" and check that.
If its not that its more than likely your rear main seal, and your oil pan gasket might seep a little as well.

nothing yet on this years get together. probably going to be in mid sept, maybe???

awsome cruiser and welcome to mud!!

I don't do any off-road driving, so I felt my BFGs were really more tire than I needed. I was storing some Michellin Navigators which were brand new, that had been on a 4Runner my son totalled. They are not quite as wide as the BFGs, but an aggressive-looking tread which looks good on the truck and about the same height. I had good luck with the BFGs, they ran quiet and balanced good and wore pretty even, so I can't say anything bad about them. But the Michellins ride so much better and the truck handles a lot better.

Got a new windshield and antenna today!! Well, my padre got them for me. Anyway, the guy at the glass shop didn't know a thing about replacing the windshield and had to take it to the professionals. They mangled the chrome stripping around it. Didn't replace the gasket. Sooo...will they be able to find that stripping and order it? Is anything used to seal that gasket or is it just popped in and good to go?

And my relay rod end at the pitman arm is worn out. Any advice?

Update on the leaks...everything leaks. I think I'm okay with that. Just add more fluid and be happy.

that joint can be tightened up, clean all the goo off it, at the end should be a cotter pin thru thr rod, which keeps a screw from turning. basically tighten the screw, or if it's really worn, you can take the entire joint apart and put a penny on each end of the joint and tighten it up, the pennies take up the slop.

or replace it.

I tried out your suggestion, 3_puppies, but it was a little too worn to save. I went ahead and replaced it. Took about an hour and a half, cost somewhere under $115.00. Totally forgot and can't find the receipt for the parts.

On another note...my driver headlamp just went out. I'm crossing my fingers, I'm gonna go move the wiring around and see if it pops back on. It costs over a hundred dollars to get a headlamp from a junkyard these days. What the hell is up with that?

Put some goop from a paint shop on all my rust...holes. Since calling them 'spots' is misleading as to their size and amount of damage. I've now started dreaming about welding new panels on behind the wheel wells. Except last night the cruiser I was getting them from had already had them scavenged off. I wonder what Freud would say.

Now way a headlight costs that much. You can pick up a new one from advance auto parts for less than $20.

Did you ever get tires? If not, take a look at the Toyo AT or MT. I was going to purchase BFG's for my F-150 when I started researching the Toyo's. They have better reviews and are a more modern design. people are getting 60,000 miles on fullsize trucks.

Also, they make a 33x10.50 M/T which may see its way onto my FJ62 after I regear and add an ARB or 2.

I just put 33x12.50 Toyo MT's on mine. Ive been running them on my other trucks and getting about 40k plus miles out of them.
