Wise and experienced men have been telling me for a year now not to "polish a turd" but I really like mine!
He got his name because of a few of his traits. 'Dirty' because when Dad brought him home his engine had like an inch of gunk coating it, we cleaned him off, and when I next came in for a tune-up, he was just as dirty again. 'Old' because he had 297,000 miles on him. And he's a man because he can't do what I ask him to but he'll sure act like he can until he figures out how.
In fact, I don't think he's a turd at all. He's got some miles on him, yes, 309,00 to be precise, and some serious rust, yes, I can reach into the back to get the lug nut wrench while still sitting in front of the tire, but there are up sides too!
1. He's my first Land Cruiser
1.5 My dad found and got him for me after my car died
2. He always eventually starts
3. His 4X4 works
4. His A/C and heater work
5. He's ALL original (even came with some sweet Grateful Dead & Dylan tapes)
6. The upholstery is in good shape
7. All the dash lights and stuff work
8. I never have to change the oil because he disposes of it on his own
While I don't have the means to do cosmetic fixes, I think he deserves to have his current state preserved.
I was going to start with the engine...but today he pointed out that he needs some new kicks by putting a huge hole in his rear driver side tire. Can't blame him, they're like eleven years old.
It was pretty exciting popping the original Toyota bottle jack and accompanying leverage bars out from under the seat for the first time. I wasn't really sure where to put the jack, so I just stuck it under the axle on the interior side of this oddly placed rectangular thing. Is that where it's supposed to go? And then I got to stand on the Toyota lug nut wrench thing, it just has the fitting for the nut, a short maybe eight bar, and a round hole for another bar of about the same length to fit through for leverage, and jump on it until they popped loose.
They're 31 x 10.5 OR15LT's. So I want to go a little bit bigger, but I honestly don't do a lot of off roading. I do need good snow and ice traction though since I live in Montana. And sometimes I like to drive in deep snow simply because I can. But I am a poor college kid. Anyone have any advice as to brand, specific tire, and size?
