Ok, first post, im kinda excited. Ive been looking at Cruisers for probably 4 years or so, wanting one very badly, wishing we would have kept our old fj60 that mom and dad traded on moms van. but anyways, I am a certified diesel nut, and the only reason that I dont have an 80 right now is because I am in college and driving 4-500 miles a week, and I had to get something a little more fuel efficient. So I opted for my second choice. A VW Jetta TDI. Awesome car, love it to death, I get 45-50 mpg, never want to part with it. But the 4x4 bug has bitten me again, and I need something. And Im not going to be happy to settle. So I need a cruiser. Just dont know when ill be able to part with the funds needed for one unfortunately.

Anyways, the point of the post. I have tried searching on it, and I couldnt find anything to satisfy me, so I have to ask. How tall is a cummins B series? How tall is the FZ engine? I have heard its almost impossible, but I still would like to know if the swap is possible. Because as many have stated on here, it would be the ultimate rig. Its not something that would be done in the next two months, so this is more of just a pondering mind thinking out loud.

Also, I have heard that the cummins puts out too much torque for a cruiser to handle, at 400 lb-ft, but isnt that very near what the supercharged 4.5 puts out? Is it because it generates the torque so low? feel free to answer any questions :) And thanks for dealing with me being a newb right now....im workin on it, I promise guys. :bounce:

Ryan,

Check out this thread for some insight on swapping in a Toyota diesel.

While the Cummins swap sounds cool it will take a huge amount of resources to pull off. You'll need patience, technical knowledge, fabrication expertise, and piles and piles of money. A Toyota diesel engine into a Toyota vehicle designed for the engine can be a major project so attempting your project will be daunting; even if you determine that everything will fit.

There will be many guys that would love to see you document the project and to succeed so keep us posted if you decide to move forward.

I have a 6BT Cummins in my Dodge truck and it would be a struggle to fit that engine into an 80 series chassis. Remember the dry-weight of the 6BT approaches 1,000 lbs. I get about 15 MPG with my truck, albeit with a 727 transmission as opposed to an OD 518 and I average around 12 MPG with the Cruiser. Hardly worth the effort to swap.

or any five speed other than the australian one? oh, and how much is it usually for the aussie five speed?

thanks,
Ryan
