I'm camping next to you on the next club outing. Are you planning to be at CM11?

Mike is correct. I'm using a small AGM and I can drain the battery in a day if I'm camped on a beach, especially if the weather is warm and the fridge is running to keep up.

what is the spec of the AGM batt?

Mike has recently discovered the most outstanding experience of a quality single malt scotch. Said scotch is currently preferred with ice cubes but plans are to try it neat before the Baja trip to see if I can forego keeping a few ice cubes in the fridge. FYI, a really good scotch with a really good chocolate is a combination that now warms the cockles of my heart when I am feeling down. Tonight I am feeling down.

Cool. When I was there last year Mexicali had a giant 7.2 earthquake on Easter Sunday. I was about 100 miles south and felt it.

Decision made. I went with the Sunforce talked about in the Expedition Portal thread. I have it zip-tied to the roof rack right now and plugged into a cig lighter socket. Under full sun it raises the battery voltage a bit more than half a volt. I just went out and took a look. The volt meter said 12.4V with the panel plugged in and 11.7V unplugged. Fridge was running and CB was on.

It appears that part of my problem is a weak battery. It doesn't seem to want to hold 12V.

I should have done this many Baja trips ago.

I had the Engel set on "ref" all day with my truck in the parking lot. In the afternoon I get filtered shade on the truck though trees. Even so, I still had 12V showing on the battery at the end of the day. I think with the bright Baja sun, and the ability to point the panel perpendicular to the sun while in camp, I should be able to keep the battery charged without running the engine.

can you have the battery tested just to make sure that it can hold a charge under load? If you need to have it replaced under warranty, better get that process started!

I've had this battery for probably 4 years. I don't know what the warranty was, but suspect it's long expired.

Can you post a link to the panel you selected?
-Mike-

I ended up purchasing the "kit" which had the controller. Right now, the panel is plugged in without the controller and the most I've seen is 13.1V. You can also purchase the panel for $10 less without the controller.

Jon,

one thing comes to my mind and that is how do you have the aux batt hooked up to the charging system? Is it simply in parallel to the main batt or is there a dual batt controller of some sort?

I have a RV isolator (diode) between the two batteries. The aux battery runs all of the non-factory accessories (two dash outlets, outlet for the fridge, air locker, CB, ham, alarm, backup light, pillar gauges, ox sensor heater, and probably some things I can't think of.)
